The centre is an international reference in business analytics through decision support systems for service and operations management, contributing also in service design, performance assessment and asset management.

Our core areas of application include Mobility/Transports, Retail/Industry and Healthcare, also with significant contributions in the Energy Sector and a strengthened collaboration with the Centre for Power and Energy Systems.

In the latest years, CEGI substantially contribute to Industry 4.0 initiatives (improving scheduling rules based on the additional information available in manufacturing systems).

INESC TEC researcher warns companies about the quality of data generated through AI in a paper published by MIT management journal

Could the increasing interest in language models, like ChatGPT, be diverting resources away from companies to adopt advanced analytics practices that truly support smart decisions? Pedro Amorim, INESC TEC researcher, and João Alves (from INESC TEC LTPLabs spin-off) believe so. In a paper published in MIT Sloan Management Review, they warn about the quality and unpredictability of data generated solely from generative language models - despite advocating for more investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that incorporates these models with advanced analysis (with concrete reasons provided).

This technology aims to make cities more accessible for everyone - and earned a recognition for an INESC TEC researcher

INESC TEC researcher Marta Campos Ferreira participated in the development of a prototype that seeks to improve the experiences of people with reduced mobility in cities – and make them more inclusive. The new solution featured at an international conference, and the researcher's work was acknowledged. Now, the goal is for the solution to reach everyone through an application.

Test Bed 5G: companies are already testing their solutions at INESC TEC

The first pilot-projects to demonstrate 5G solutions aimed at the manufacturing industry have already started at INESC TEC Industry and Innovation Laboratory (iiLab). Companies will be able to test their solutions and develop products and services that resort to the new generation network. The pilots are part of the Test Bed 5G project, led by NOS – in partnership with Sonae MC and Wells, and with INESC TEC participation.

INESC TEC research selected for special issue of international journal

The research work The pallet loading problem: a review of solution methods and computational experiments, by Elsa Silva and José Fernando Oliveira, researchers at INESC TEC, and Gerhard Wäscher, professor at Otto-von-Guericke University, in Magdeburg (Germany), was one of 30 papers selected to feature in the edition marking the 30th anniversary of the International Transactions in Operational Research (ITOR) journal.

Heuristics for online three-dimensional packing problems and algorithm selection framework for semi-online with full look-ahead

Abstract
In online three-dimensional packing problems (3D-PPs), unlike offline problems, items arrive sequentially and require immediate packing decisions without any information about the quantities and sizes of the items to come. Heuristic methods are of great importance in solving online problems to find good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. However, the literature on heuristics for online problems is sparse. As our first contribution, we developed a pool of heuristics applicable to online 3D-PPs with complementary performance on different sets of instances. Computational results showed that in terms of the number of used bins, in all problem instances, at least one of our heuristics had a better or equal performance compared to existing heuristics in the literature. The developed heuristics are also fully applicable to an intermediate class between offline and online problems, referred to in this paper as a specific type of semi-online with full look-ahead, which has several practical applications. In this class, as in offline problems, complete information about all items is known in advance (i.e., full look-ahead); however, due to time or space constraints, as in online problems, items should be packed immediately in the order of their arrival. As our second contribution, we presented an algorithm selection framework, building on developed heuristics and utilizing prior information about items in this specific class of problems. We used supervised machine learning techniques to find the relationship between the features of problem instances and the performance of heuristics and to build a prediction model. The results indicate an 88% accuracy in predicting (identifying) the most promising heuristic(s) for solving any new instance from this class of problems.

D3S: Decision support system for sectorization

Abstract
Sectorization problems refer to dividing a large set, area or network into smaller parts concerning one or more objectives. A decision support system (DSS) is a relevant tool for solving these problems, improving optimisation procedures, and finding feasible solutions more efficiently. This paper presents a new web-based Decision Support System for Sectorization (D3S). D3S is designed to solve sectorization problems in various areas, such as school and health districting,planning sales territories and maintenance operations zones, or political districting. Due to its generic design, D3S bridges the gap between sectorization problems and a state-of-the-art decision support tool. The paper aims to present the generic and technical attributes of D3S by providing detailed information regarding the problem-solution approach (based on Evolutionary Algorithms), objectives (most common in sectorization), constraints, structure and performance.

Many-objective sectorization for last-mile delivery optimization: A decision support system

Abstract
The efficient last-mile delivery of goods involves complex challenges in optimizing driver sectors and routes. This problem tends to be large-scale and involves several criteria to meet simultaneously, such as creating compact sectors, balancing the workload among drivers, minimizing the number of undelivered packages and reducing the dissimilarity of sectors on different days. This work proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) that allows decision-makers to select improved allocation strategies to define sectors. The main contribution is an interactive DSS tool that addresses a many-objective (more than 3 objectives) sectorization problem with integrated routing. It establishes a global allocation strategy and uses it as a benchmark for the created daily allocations and routes. A Preference-Inspired Co-Evolutionary Algorithm with Goal vectors using Mating Restriction (PICEA-g-mr) is employed to solve the many-objective optimization problem. The DSS also includes a visualization tool to aid decision-makers in selecting the most suitable allocation strategy. The approach was tested in a medium-sized Metropolitan Area and evaluated using resource evaluation metrics and visualization methods. The proposed DSS deals effectively and efficiently with the sectorization problem in the context of last-mile delivery by producing a set of viable and good-quality allocations, empowering decision-makers in selecting better allocation strategies. Focused on enhancing service efficiency and driver satisfaction, the DSS serves as a valuable tool to improve overall service quality.

A configurational perspective for the generalisation of healthcare innovations: The case of a new screening programme

Abstract
This paper analyses the process of generalisation of an innovative government-led public practice in the healthcare sector. The scaling and embedding involved in this generalisation process are assumed to be dependent on the multiple implementation processes (consecutive or simultaneous) that lead to a routine use of the innovation in different adopters. This paper, therefore, proposes the use of a configurational theory approach to conceptualise each implementation of the innovation during the generalisation process and shed light on the generalisation's scaling and embedding efforts. It suggests a set of recommendations and practices for generalisation managers, most notably: i) they should regard generalisations as organic processes where their main role is to create space for experimentation, learning and negotiation, and ii) they should adopt different modes of governance to identify adequate mechanisms and strategies and guide their actions. This configurational perspective allows them to monitor and manage the evolution of implementations, informs the valuable learning processes that take place in a generalisation and has been found to be a useful tool to support the crucial collaboration among the actors involved in a generalisation.

Reducing the feasible solution space of resource-constrained project instances

Abstract
This paper present an instance transformation procedure to modify known instances of the resource -constrained project scheduling problem to make them easier to solve by heuristic and/or exact solution algorithms. The procedure makes use of a set of transformation rules that aim at reducing the feasible search space without excluding at least one possible optimal solution. The procedure will be applied to a set of 11,183 instances and it will be shown by a set of experiments that these transformations lead to 110 improved lower bounds, 16 new and better schedules (found by three meta -heuristic procedures and a set of branch -and -bound procedures) and even 64 new optimal solutions which were never not found before.
