INESC TEC won innovation and best master's thesis awards in Robotics at international conference

The Institute received two awards during the 25th edition of the IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions (ICARSC2025), consolidating the prominent position in the international robotics ecosystem. During the ICARSC2025 - considered one of the leading international scientific conferences in the field of autonomous robotics and competitions - the Portuguese Robotics Society (SRC) honoured the Institute with the Innovation and Technology Transfer Award in Robotics, plus the award for Best Master's Thesis.

The Ecovale project and the legacy of energy efficiency in the community

For two years, the Ecovale project promoted the active participation of the communities of Vila Nova de Famalicão and Barcelos in various awareness-raising activities on energy vulnerability and energy efficiency. Training activities for adults and children, an innovation platform, energy clubs in schools, and many hours of knowledge exchange later, the message is clear: we are on the right track to save more energy and become even more sustainable - with INESC TEC part of this mission.

INESC TEC demonstrated technology during event dedicated to land defence

During the Land Defence Industry Day, INESC TEC presented several R&D results (with application in the defence and security sector): a fully electric dual-use, modular, and autonomous robot; an autonomous landing station; and a communications payload integrated into unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

In Porto, research and technology infrastructures acted as a bridge to Brussels

It was a day to observe important dates. The INESC Brussels HUB Winter Meeting 2025 brought over 200 people to Porto to define the next steps regarding a central pillar for the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in Europe: research and technology infrastructures. The meeting also served as a reminder of Portugal’s progressive European integration, which began 40 years ago – running alongside the establishment and growth of INESC TEC – and marked five years of INESC institutes’ representation in Brussels.

INESC TEC researchers strengthened the partnership with CENTRA international network

INESC TEC reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to international research collaboration by participating in the CENTRA 2025 event, a global initiative that brings together research centres, institutes, and laboratories from across the world to drive the development of transnational cyberinfrastructures. This year’s edition focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring application in linguistics, cognitive psychology and advanced management of cyberinfrastructures.

Empowering creativity with Artificial Intelligence: INESC TEC part of European project that is developing said skills

It is called AI-SCRETT (AI-Supported Education for Creative Empowerment through Responsible Technology and Training) and was officially approved in March 2025; it benefits from €7.2M to develop advanced digital skills, focusing on the intersection between creativity and AI. INESC TEC is one of the partners of this project funded by the European Commission’s Digital Europe programme.

INESC TEC researchers organised an international conference on computer vision and computer graphics

The VISIGRAPP 2025 - 20th International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications - took place in Porto, in late February. It brought together more than 380 researchers and professionals interested in keeping up with and discussing theoretical advances and applications in Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Human-Computer Interaction, and Information Visualisation - the main themes of the co-located conferences VISAPP, GRAPP, HUCAPP, and IVAPP, respectively. One of the co-chairs of this conference was INESC TEC researcher A. Augusto de Sousa.

Data from the latest annual report published by the European Patent Office (EPO) places INESC TEC in the national top 10 of institutions with the most patent applications registered. In 2024, INESC TEC submitted six European patent applications, five of which as the first holder.

European Alliance seeks to drive the future of offshore wind power

After joining the new European offshore demonstration platform High Power Test Sites (HiPoTeSis) last July, the Companhia da Energia Oceânica (CEO) - a company led by INESC TEC and WavEC Offshore Renewables - is now joining efforts with the other four entities involved to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind power.
