Luís Pereira, Rui Pedro Oliveira and Tiago Pereira won third place in the Inter-University Programming Marathon, after solving six of the 11 problems presented to them in five hours. Participating in an international competition is the new challenge of CatamorfismUM, the name of the team composed of INESC TEC researchers.

Hélder Oliveira, INESC TEC researcher, is the new chairman of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP). APRP is a non-profit association whose objective is to promote advances, both theoretical and practical, in the scientific domain of pattern recognition. In this sense, it is responsible for organising numerous conferences, meetings and training courses and disseminating scientific and technical information.

Justino Rodrigues, INESC TEC researcher, was the big winner of the REN 2023 awards, in the category of "Best PhD thesis" in energy. In his thesis, developed within the scope of the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) - and supervised by two INESC TEC researchers, Carlos Moreira and João Peças Lopes - Justino Rodrigues was able to test the incorporation of new functionalities for smart transformers applied to microgrids and multi-micro-grids; thanks to his work, the researcher received €30K.

The Executive Master in Cybersecurity – a training programme by INESC TEC and Porto Business School (PSB), will start on February 19, with a one-year duration. The goal is to train experts who seek to protect digital assets and confidential data on the computer and network systems of their companies, government agencies or other organisations against cyberattacks.

INESC TEC participated in the project THEIA – “Automated Perception Driving”, a partnership between Bosch and the University of Porto, which presented results in September. The project focused on the development of sensors to improve road safety, and the Institute developed neural network architectures to improve autonomous vehicles’ perception of their surroundings.

Research concluded that the use of compressed Artificial Intelligence (AI) models for facial recognition can lead to racial bias. The study, which also identifies a potential strategy to address this issue using synthetic data, received a Best Paper Award at the BIOSIG international conference.
