Biomedical Engineering Research

At C-BER our main goals are the creation of interdisciplinary knowledge enabling innovation and technology transfer with economic impact; and also the development of products, tools and methods for the prevention and early detection of different types of diseases, aging-related impairments, or for human rehabilitation, physical therapy or functional assessment.

We also seek to contribute to the development of advanced neuro-technologies at the frontier of engineering and neurology, and to promote strategic partnerships with clinical partners, research institutes, and fostering international cooperation.

Our R&D activity is developed in three different areas: BioInstrumentation, Biomedical Imaging and NeuroEngineering.

An automatic system to detect cardiovascular problems? An INESC TEC initiative, currently being tested in Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho local healthcare unit

Let’s imagine we are in a doctor’s office. A patient complains of a persistent cough. The healthcare professional explains that further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis. The recommended test is a computed tomography (CT) scan. The results will confirm whether a tumour is present. Now imagine this: what if, beyond the primary diagnosis, it were possible to automatically identify signs of cardiovascular risk that might otherwise go unnoticed? This is where INESC TEC steps in with the new CardioComplete project. The Institute is developing an automatic, interactive, and explainable tool designed to complement medical reports - and help save lives.

INESC TEC technology for monitoring fetal movements among BIP PROOF winners

It is an innovative prototype that combines a belt with sensors and a digital application to detect, quantify and locate a baby’s movements in real time. Designed for home use, it is called WeFetal and has just been recognised by BIP PROOF, a programme run by the University of Porto to support the development of proof-of-concept projects.

INESC TEC researcher's work in epilepsy earns him award for Innovation in Artificial Intelligence at the largest technology fair in the world

Tamás Karácsony, a researcher at INESC TEC, received the award for Innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the IEEE AI Research Hub competition - organised by IEEE Entrepreneurship and the IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Committee -; the event took place in Dubai, within the scope of GITEX Global 2024. Considered the largest technology and start-up fair in the world, GITEX Global 2024 featured a presentation by Tamás Karácsony about his research to classify epileptic seizures filmed with AI-powered 3D video technology. This pioneering work carried out at INESC TEC reinforces the role that the Institute has played in the connection between AI and health.
