Tourism Recommendation System based in user's profile and functionality levels

Abstract
This paper describes a proposal to develop a Tourism Recommendation System based in users enhanced profiles (composed by basic user information, relations between user and a set of stereotypes and user functionality levels). The main focus of this work is to evaluate if user's physical and psychological functionality levels considered in user's profiles creation, will produce significant changes in the recommendation results. This work aims also to contribute with a different way to classify points-of-interest (POI) considering their capacity to receive tourists with certain levels of physical and psychological issues that will be described in this paper sections. © 2016 ACM.

Net load forecasting in presence of renewable power curtailment

Abstract
This paper analyzes a real case study based on an islanding power grid, where there is wind power curtailment during the grid operation. This curtailment skews the wind power production database creating a huge challenge to the overall power production forecast. Thus, it is presented a solution which has allowed more accurate forecasts in order to improve the renewable production and reduce the fuel consumption in thermal power plants. The proposed filtering approach demonstrated to be a good solution allowing wind power forecasts with less error and net load forecasts with more accuracy.

Innovation performance in service companies and KIBS vis-a-vis manufacturing: the relevance of absorptive capacity and openness

Abstract
Purpose - The present paper adds to the most recent current of literature that highlights the importance of innovation in services, analyzing a setting - Portugal - which is relatively backward in terms of innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a sample of 4128 companies (including 1489 service companies) that answered the Community Innovation Survey 2008, we assessed, by resorting to logistic regressions, the determinants of innovation performance in Portuguese companies. Findings - 1) Workers who have the 1st cycle of higher education have a positive and significant impact on the innovation of service companies whereas PhDs are detrimental to companies' innovative performance; 2) Companies in the service sector in general, and in KIBS in particular, that effectively invest in external and (continuous) internal R&D activities are more innovative; 3) External scientific sources of information for innovation are crucial (and much more than in manufacturing) to the innovation performance of service companies, especially of KIBS; 4) Similarly to manufacturing, participation in innovation activities in cooperation with foreign partners appears as a key factor in the innovative performance of service companies. Originality/value - The study demonstrates the influence of companies' openness and the relative importance attributed to different sources of information for innovation on innovation outcomes of service companies (and KIBS) compared to manufacturing industries.

Special diffractive elements for optical trapping fabricated on optical fiber tips using the focused ion beam

Abstract
In this work, spiral phase lenses and Fresnel zone lenses for beam tailoring, fabricated on the tip of optical fibers, are reported. The spiral phase lenses allow tailoring the fundamental guided mode, a Gaussian beam, into a Laguerre - Gaussian profile without using additional optical elements. Whereas, the Fresnel lenses are used as focusing systems. The lenses are fabricated using Focused Ion Beam milling, enabling high resolution in the manufacturing process. The output optical intensity profiles matching the numerical simulations are presented and analyzed.

Comparing and Benchmarking Semantic Measures Using SMComp

Abstract
The goal of the semantic measures is to compare pairs of concepts, words, sentences or named entities. Their categorization depends on what they measure. If a measure only considers taxonomy relationships is a similarity measure; if it considers all type of relationships it is a relatedness measure. The evaluation process of these measures usually relies on semantic gold standards. These datasets, with several pairs of words with a rating assigned by persons, are used to assess how well a semantic measure performs. There are a few frameworks that provide tools to compute and analyze several well-known measures. This paper presents a novel tool - SMComp - a testbed designed for path-based semantic measures. At its current state, it is a domain-specific tool using three different versions of WordNet. SMComp has two views: one to compute semantic measures of a pair of words and another to assess a semantic measure using a dataset. On the first view, it offers several measures described in the literature as well as the possibility of creating a new measure, by introducing Java code snippets on the GUI. The other view offers a large set of semantic benchmarks to use in the assessment process. Scene Representations for Autonomous Driving: An Approach Based on Polygonal Primitives

Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel methodology to compute a 3D scene representation. The algorithm uses macro scale polygonal primitives to model the scene. This means that the representation of the scene is given as a list of large scale polygons that describe the geometric structure of the environment. Results show that the approach is capable of producing accurate descriptions of the scene. In addition, the algorithm is very efficient when compared to other techniques.
