Portuguese technology travels to Brazil for invasive species monitoring

The Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) developed a technology to help monitor an invasive species in Brazil. The sun coral – an invasive species that emerged on the Asian continent and has already colonised the entire Gulf of Mexico – appeared in Brazil in the 1980s. Experts suspect that this species came from oil platforms brought from Asia to other continents.

Innovative technology will create the first demonstrator of a fully printed IoT node

A sustainable communications solution for the Internet of Things (IoT) is under development. The solution stems from a combination of light and radio communications, in a flexible way, exploring a technology based on printed electronics. More than 11 eleven entities are working on this solution as part of the SUPERIOT (Truly Sustainable Printed Electronics-based IoT Combining Optical and Radio Wireless Technologies) project, funded by the European Commission (€5.6M). There are three Portuguese entities involved - the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Wavecom.

Portuguese team successfully tests autonomous robots to inspect floating offshore wind farms

The first offshore floating wind farm to be installed off the coast of Europe was the scene of an unprecedented demonstration: two autonomous vehicles were deployed simultaneously for inspection and maintenance operations on an offshore wind farm with floating foundations. This significant achievement - it was the first demonstration of its kind to take place at an Atlantic offshore wind farm with floating foundations - carried out at WindFloat Atlantic, located off the coast of Viana do Castelo, in Portugal, could change the future of maintenance operations in the renewable energy industry by enabling safer and faster interventions. The technology also aims to reduce operating costs.

Portuguese Technology on the podium of european innovation awards

MyNPK is a smart photonics solution that combines spectroscopy and Artificial Intelligence to quantify nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) in liquid fertilisers - in situ and in real time. The technology was developed by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) and allows to manage and optimise the use of fertilisers according to the plants' nutritional needs. The goal? To improve production, reduce fertiliser waste and reuse, minimise water consumption and environmental impact. Thanks to this technology, INESC TEC won the third place in the Innovation Prize awarded by the European Association EARTO (European Association of Research and Technology Organisations).

Portuguese research in the Arctic: DNA samples collected in extreme environments

A group of Portuguese researchers was recently in the Arctic collecting environmental DNA samples in extreme conditions. The team used a technology called biosampler, which facilitates the task of biologists who will then analyse the samples. The biosampler was coupled to a robot that allowed the autonomous operation of the two Portuguese technologies. The researchers returned to Portugal with samples, collected in different points of the Arctic - now under a laboratory analysis.
