Abstract
We report an alternative technique to interrogate a long-period fiber grating (LPG) when the grating sensitivity is based on the peak amplitude changes of the resonant wavelength. To read the amplitude changes, a conventional optical domain reflectometer was used. Bend measurements were performed to apply such method and to determine the grating sensitivity for this physical parameter. Reflective measurements, temperature insensitive, and the possibility of multiplexing LPG sensors are some advantages offered by this technique. Abstract
Permanent long-period gratings were written using arc discharges in two aluminosilicate fibers, one of which was doped with erbium. Reversible gratings were also mechanically induced in both fibers. The thermal behavior of the arc-induced gratings was investigated at up to 1100 degrees C. It was found that the shift of the resonant wavelengths exhibited a well-defined linear dependence on temperature up to 700 degrees C. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Abstract
We model the photocurrent of a depth-scan (A-scan) from an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system, using a linearly polarized thermal source, as an electronically filtered doubly-stochastic Poisson process, and we obtain its time-varying second-order statistics. We derive an expression for the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of time-domain OCT which is more general than the previously reported time-averaged expressions. Unlike previous work, our analysis combines shot noise, due to detection of coherent light, and photon excess noise, due to fluctuations in the optical field, into a single noise source that we refer to as the photoelectron noise. Similar to previous results, our SNR is dominated by a term similar to shot-noise when the reference optical power is low and by a term similar to photon excess noise when the reference power is high. © 2005 SPIE and OSA.

Abstract
We experimentally study the effect of ionizing radiation on the properties of long-period gratings fabricated in two pure-silica-core fibers with the arc-discharge technique. It is observed that the spectra of the gratings remain almost unchanged after being subjected to doses in excess of 0.5 MGy. The results also show that the gratings' temperature and strain sensitivities are not affected by gamma radiation. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.
