FIBER AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Abstract
A general overview of the R&D activity in fiber optic sensing developed over the last fifteen years in Portugal is given. Different topics are addressed, including interferometric, intensity and Bragg grating based fiber optic sensors, signal processing and multiplexing techniques, optical current sensors, together with some references to field trials and applications. Possible guidelines for present and future national R&D activity on this subject are outlined.

FIBER AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Abstract
The electric arc technique allows the inscription of long-period gratings (LPGs) virtually in all types of fibers, including non-photosensitive fibers, the case of non-Ge doped photonic crystal fibers being of particular interest. LPGs written in standard fibers using this technique have shown a high thermal stability. Also, the resistance to. - radiation of LPGs arc-induced in pure-silica-core fibers is being assessed and the achieved results are very promising. We have also demonstrated that the combination of arc-induced LPGs and UV-induced fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) leads to sampled FBGs that are able to address sensing functionalities with enhanced performance. Therefore, as a result of their properties, gratings induced by arc-discharges can find a wide range of applications in optical communications as well as in fiber sensing.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF OPERATIONAL RESEARCH

Abstract
This paper enhances cost efficiency measurement methods to account for different scenarios relating to input price information. These consist of situations where prices are known exactly at each decision making unit (DMU) and situations with incomplete price information. The main contribution of this paper consists of the development of a method for the estimation of upper and lower bounds for the cost efficiency (CE) measure in situations of price uncertainty, where only the maximal and minimal bounds of input prices can be estimated for each DMU. The bounds of the CE measure are obtained from assessments in the light of the most favourable price scenario (optimistic perspective) and the least favourable price scenario (pessimistic perspective). The assessments under price uncertainty are based on extensions to the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model that incorporate weight restrictions of the form of input cone assurance regions. The applicability of the models developed is illustrated in the context of the analysis of bank branch performance. The results obtained in the case study showed that the DEA models can provide robust estimates of cost efficiency even in situations of price uncertainty.

REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS

Abstract
An evaluation of two optical fiber sensing heads for measuring transversal load is presented. Their construction introduces power loss without the need of a pair of deformer plates and is based on crossing two fibers in braid-type (braid twisted), and of an optical fiber stretched out which is wrapped up by another one in spiral form (spiral twisted), respectively. For a higher sensitivity, the braid twisted configuration is preferable. Nevertheless, in both sensing heads, the sensitivity can be enhanced by decreasing the enrollment period and/or by choosing the appropriate encapsulation of the sensing head. Relative to resolution and hysteresis, the spiral twisted sensing head presented the best result. However, further work on the plasticity of the coatings is needed to decrease hysteresis. These configurations can be embedded in composite materials and used in many applications. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

ELECTRONICS LETTERS

Abstract
A study on arc-induced long-period fibre gratings (LPFGs) revealed that their strain sensitivity depends on the electric current of the arc discharge. Based on that property, a sensor scheme comprising two concatenated LPFGs was implemented for discrimination of temperature and strain effects. This sensor presented resolutions of +/-0.1 degreesC/rootHz and +/-35 muepsilon/rootHz, respectively.
