Phase-interrogated SPR sensing structures based on tapered and tip optrode optical fiber configurations with bimetallic layers

Abstract
This work reports the theoretical investigation of optical fiber surface plasmon resonance sensors incorporating bimetallic layer combinations. Different metals like silver, gold, copper, and aluminum are considered to investigate the refractometric sensing properties of tapered and tip optrode phase-interrogated optical fiber plasmonic sensor structures. It is shown that the gold-silver combination, coupled to a tip optrode layout, is capable of maximizing the resolution and operation range of these sensing structures for environmental refractive index measurement.

A bifurcation theorem for evolutionary matrix models with multiple traits

Abstract
One fundamental question in biology is population extinction and persistence, i.e., stability/instability of the extinction equilibrium and of non-extinction equilibria. In the case of nonlinear matrix models for structured populations, a bifurcation theorem answers this question when the projection matrix is primitive by showing the existence of a continuum of positive equilibria that bifurcates from the extinction equilibrium as the inherent population growth rate passes through 1. This theorem also characterizes the stability properties of the bifurcating equilibria by relating them to the direction of bifurcation, which is forward (backward) if, near the bifurcation point, the positive equilibria exist for inherent growth rates greater (less) than 1. In this paper we consider an evolutionary game theoretic version of a general nonlinear matrix model that includes the dynamics of a vector of mean phenotypic traits subject to natural selection. We extend the fundamental bifurcation theorem to this evolutionary model. We apply the results to an evolutionary version of a Ricker model with an added Allee component. This application illustrates the theoretical results and, in addition, several other interesting dynamic phenomena, such as backward bifurcation induced strong Allee effects.

Abstract
E-commerce website owners rely heavily on analysing and summarising the behaviour of costumers, making efforts to influence user actions and optimize success metrics. Machine learning and data mining techniques have been applied in this field, greatly influencing the Internet marketing activities. When faced with a new e-commerce website, the data scientist starts a process of collecting real-time and historical data about it, analysing and transforming this data in order to get a grasp into the website and its users. Data scientists commonly resort to tracking domain-specific events, requiring code modification of the web pages. This paper proposes an alternative approach to retrieve information from a given e-commerce website, collecting data from the site's structure, retrieving semantic information in predefined locations and analysing user's access logs, thus enabling the development of accurate models for predicting users' future behaviour. This is accomplished by the application of a web mining process, comprehending the site's structure, content and usage in a pipeline, resulting in a web graph of the website, complemented with a categorization of each page and the website's archetypical user profiles. 1877-0509 (C) 2017 The Authors. Price Forecasting of Electricity Markets in the Presence of a High Penetration of Wind Power Generators

Abstract
Price forecasting plays a vital role in the day-ahead markets. Once sellers and buyers access an accurate price forecasting, managing the economic risk can be conducted appropriately through offering or bidding suitable prices. In networks with high wind power penetration, the electricity price is influenced by wind energy; therefore, price forecasting can be more complicated. This paper proposes a novel hybrid approach for price forecasting of day-ahead markets, with high penetration of wind generators based on Wavelet transform, bivariate Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) method and Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFN). To this end, a weighted time series for wind dominated power systems is calculated and added to a bivariate ARIMA model along with the price time series. Moreover, RBFN is applied as a tool to correct the estimation error, and particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to optimize the structure and adapt the RBFN to the particular training set. This method is evaluated on the Spanish electricity market, which shows the efficiency of this approach. This method has less error compared with other methods especially when it considers the effects of large-scale wind generators.
