The meeting of INESC TEC’s General Council took place on April 11, with the election of the Associative Bodies for the 2024-2026 term. The 2023 Financial and Activity Reports were also approved.

INESC TEC technology travels to Brazil for invasive species monitoring

The Institute developed a technology to help monitor an invasive species in Brazil. The sun coral – an invasive species that emerged on the Asian continent and has already colonised the entire Gulf of Mexico – appeared in Brazil in the 1980s. Experts suspect that this species came from oil platforms brought from Asia to other continents.

INVICTA Spring School (INvicta School of VIsion, Computational Intelligence, and PatTern Analysis) was the stage for an immersive journey to the domains of Artificial Intelligence (AI) between March 18 and 22. Organised by INESC TEC, the event took place at the Porto Innovation Hub, with sold out capacity.

Ubirider: INESC TEC attains close to €2M in funding round

The funding raised by Ubirider will enable the company to grow internationally and to improve the product development and marketing teams. The funding round was co-led by the Portuguese investment funds Techtree Investments and Cedrus R&D III, with the participation of two business angels: José Santos (Portugal/U.S.A.) and Andrés Alcalá (Colombia); this led to a total of €1.95M of investment in the start-up co-founded by INESC TEC.

Já arrancou o primeiro projeto europeu liderado pelo INESC TEC na área da saúde

Chama-se AI4Lungs e tem como objetivo desenvolver ferramentas e modelos computacionais baseados em Inteligência Artificial para otimizar o diagnóstico e o tratamento de doenças pulmonares. Através de uma abordagem holística e multimodal, os investigadores vão criar uma solução de cuidados de saúde personalizados para doenças respiratórias. No final de fevereiro, representantes das 18 entidades parceiras do projeto, provenientes de 10 países, reuniram-se no INESC TEC para assinalar o arranque do AI4Lungs.

Two post-doctoral fellowships; one year at INESC TEC – applications are open for the Alain Bensoussan programme

INESC TEC will welcome two post-doctoral candidates within the scope of the international Alain Bensoussan programme, promoted by the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). The research topics cover several domains in Computer Science, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics. The deadline for submitting applications is April 30.

Empowering the engineering of the future: the journey of discovery to INESC TEC

From March 19 to 21, INESC TEC welcomed more than 110 high school students from several regions of the country, boosting their curiosity about the daily life of engineers. Within the scope of the Semana da Profissão: Engenharia (SPE), organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), the participants explored the power and energy, industrial robotics, and maritime robotics domains.

INESC TEC in the top 10 national applicants in the registration of European patents

Data from the last annual report published by the European Patent Office (EPO) place INESC TEC in the national top of the institutions with the most patent applications registered, making it one of the organisations with a more sustainable and constant presence since 2017. In 2023, INESC TEC registered six patents in the fields of power and energy, software (navigation), medical technology, cybersecurity, instrumentation, and robotics.

Studies show that people with lower incomes, immigrants, younger people, and the elderly are the most affected by the context of a Europe in transition. The European project RECONNECTED seeks to connect these vulnerable communities, relying on INESC TEC to develop a digital support platform.

New heart sounds analysis method tested for non-invasive diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension

Researchers from Portugal, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America joined efforts to develop and test a new heart sounds analysis method for the fast and non-invasive identification of pulmonary hypertension. The results of this research work, recently published in the IEEE Access journal, show that the path to a smarter diagnosis of this disease is open.

RENEE: the project that seeks to make the European industry more circular through remanufacturing

The future of the industry is becoming more sustainable and circular. The RENEE project - with INESC TEC as a partner - seeks to use advanced robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support production management and the value chain, in the processes of flexible remanufacturing, i.e., to include the use of products that are not new in the industrial process. Starting in early 2024, the project includes the creation of a digital infrastructure for the management of product remanufacturing processes, as well as a set of tools that will allow industries to enter a new era, in which the circular economy will be the main aspect throughout the production process.
