
One of the world’s largest and most prestigious robotics conferences, IROS (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems), took place this year, in China (late October). INESC TEC was represented by four researchers who presented five papers at this event, which gathered more than 8,000 participants from across the globe.

The Innovation Radar Prize has just recognised the 12 most promising spin-offs in Europe; Seedsight – established in INESC TEC – made the ranking in the Smart Hardware and Robotics category. This comes in the same month that the INESC TEC spin-off successfully concluded an investment round worth €1.78M, including €1M in public funding, marking yet another important milestone in the company’s growth.

An event within the scope of the be@t project marked the presentation of the Textile Sorting Pilot Unit – an infrastructure incorporating solutions developed by INESC TEC, capable of processing around 50 tonnes of waste per year.

Combining advanced techniques in machine learning, deep learning, and eXplainable AI, a new system is being developed to predict operational faults and generate understandable explanations for maintenance teams. FOX-PM is a project bringing together INESC TEC and CaetanoBus to create an innovative online and explainable predictive maintenance system for electric bus fleets. The goal is to increase system reliability, reduce downtime, and optimise resource use.

From Porto to Viana, with a stop in Aguçadoura: this is the route towards the future of renewable energy. Over two days, the EnerTEF consortium – with INESC TEC as a member - had the opportunity to discuss the project’s achievements and visit one of the Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) based in Portugal - a site where it will be possible to test, validate, and certify Artificial Intelligence solutions applied to the energy sector.

After the invitation by the Confederação Empresarial de Portugal (CIP), INESC TEC took part in a high-level, closed-door meeting held in Lisbon with Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission. The exclusive meeting was attended only by presidents and CEOs of Portuguese associations and companies, with INESC TEC represented by João Claro, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

We already know a great deal about COVID-19; however, there is still much to uncover. This was the idea behind COVID-19 e a Condição Pós-COVID, an initiative promoted by the Institute of Advanced Studies of Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and coordinated by Alexandre Quintanilha – which brought together several experts to present ongoing research and projects on the subject. INESC TEC participated to address innovation in times of emergency and uncertainty, highlighting the key role played in 2020 as a research, innovation, and policy advisory actor.
