Extraction of semiconductor intrinsic laser parameters by intermodulation distortion analysis

Abstract
A new technique is described for the extraction of the intrinsic semiconductor laser parameters from intermodulation measurements of composite second-order (CSO) and composite third-order (CTB) distortion products. The effect of the parasitics elements are eliminated, by taking the distortion measurements at constant optical modulation depth, which enables one to obtain the laser parameters on packaged laser diodes. An optimization algorithm is then described that extracts the relevant laser parameters from the distortion data. This method was applied to a commercially available packaged laser diode and very good agreement was obtained between the measured and theoretical results.

Intelligent and low cost continuous relative density measurement in batch fermenters

Abstract
In this article we present two methods for the real time automatic measurement of the relative density. The first one relies on the heat generated during the fermentation which requires no additional sensors in the tanks. It is based on the thermal model of the tank and the only additional requirements are the measurement of the temperature of the surrounding air. The other method is based on two low-cost pressure sensors with an algorithm for autocalibration and compensation of temperature perturbation. The autocalibration is done during fermenter feeding and with only one manual measurement of the relative density.

Multiple AUVS for coastal oceanography

Abstract
This paper presents the recent developments of the project Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for Coastal Oceanography, of the University of Porto. The project envisages the development of a highly operational and low-cost system for scientific and environmental data collection in the Portuguese coastal waters. The project activities suggested the development of a Generalized Vehicle (GV) Control Architecture for multiple vehicles. Reconfigurability, reliability and operational effectiveness, are at the basis of this control architecture, which encompasses human intervention besides the cooperation among AUVs and other system devices. A simulation environment was developed in SHIFT, to support the design and testing of the GV control architecture. SHIFT is a new specification language for describing dynamic networks of hybrid automata, which constitute the most adequate formalism for this problem domain.

The unification of OMT, SDL and IDL for service creation

Abstract
Like many other subjects, SDL is embroiled in the fusion of the Telecom and Information systems worlds. This represents a shift from the predominant use of SDL in relatively closed Telecom areas to the more and more widely used open distributed processing environments. ACTS project AC227, SCREEN, is working to improve the creation of distributed telematic services. This paper presents some of the issues and challenges that these new environments present to SDL language, and the rationale for combing SDL with OMT and the targeting to CORBA compliant environments.

Code generation strategy for CORBA-based internet applications

Abstract
We present an integrated approach (practices) to object-oriented, distributed, application development that covers all phases of software development: requirements capture, analysis, design (structural and behavioural), simulation and targeting to CORBA-based distributed processing environments. We focus on a code generation strategy that addresses and supports all phases of the practices. We highlight code generation objectives including support for multiple paths through the practices, reuse of existing tool-sets and support for traceability. We describe one path in more detail and present an example of design OMT to SDL translation based on labelling in OMT. We describe two development environments used in the project and analyse them with respect to their support for our code generation objectives. Our tool adaptation work is addressing identified weaknesses. This includes an SDL to Java/CORBA code generator, the generation of CORBA-to-SDL-mapping C++ wrappers for C code generated by existing tools and the use of CORBA to integrate development tools and support traceability.
