Abstract
We show that the evolution equations describing the two-wave mixing interaction between two co-directional optical beams in photorefractive media can allow spatial shock-wave solutions. The properties of this new family of kink-type wave fronts are described in detail. © 2001 OSA/NLGW 2001, © 2000 Optical Society of America.

Abstract
In this paper a recursive technique, based on the subspace state space identification methods, is presented for identification of time-varying systems. The main idea was to develop an iterative algorithm with most of the advantages of this kind of methods in order to deal with real-time applications and minimize the computational burden. As a subspace-based state space system identification technique, it has two main steps: first, a state vector sequence is estimated, using numerical linear algebra tools, then the state space model is obtained from a simple least squares model. © 2001 EUCA.

Abstract
Crop models are useful to improve the management and control of the greenhouse climate. In fact, they are essential if it is intended to optimize the climate control according to a defined production plan. In this paper are reviewed simulation models developed for horticultural crops with emphasis on leaf area and dry matter production. The dynamic crop models are based on the description of the crop photosynthesis and respiration processes. Various models were tested for a tomato crop grown in a greenhouse with a soil medium. The environmental factors such as air temperature and humidity, photosynthetic flux density, carbon dioxide concentration, among others, were measured, with a sampling rate of 1 minute and the mean values were stored with a 30min time interval. Plant leaf area and fresh and dry weights were measured by conducing periodic destructive tests. The results achieved with the different models employed are discussed and their applicability addressed.

Abstract
A sensor for measurement of refractive index in oils was discussed. The sensor comprised a fiber based-device sensing head placed in a self-referenced fiber optic intensity sensor. The sensing head works on the principle of change of the refractive index of the medium that surrounds the unclad portion of multimode fiber. This results in different attenuation of the guided modes that propagate in the fiber. The injection current of the optical source was swept in frequency to obtain the transfer function.
