Immunosensors for diagnostic applications

Abstract
Immunosensors can play an important role in the improvement of veterinary diagnostics in areas such as the diagnosis of diseases. drug detection and food quality control, by providing applications with rapid detection. high sensitivity and specificity. Associated with advances in biochemistry. biotechnology. electronics and microfabrication, new transduction devices that translate a biological interaction into an electrical signal have been developed. An overview of the current immunoassay techniques used in standard diagnosis is presented. This includes a brief description of the different immunosensor transducer principles and some examples of present and future developments.

Sampled fibre Bragg grating sensors for simultaneous strain and temperature measurement

Abstract
A new scheme is presented for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature using a sampled fibre Bragg grating based on a long period structure written using the electric are technique. The temperature and strain measurement resolutions are estimated to be +/-0.50degreesC/rootHz and +/-3.38 muepsilon/rootHz, respectively.

Abstract
This paper describes a new concept of a Negotiation Aid System, developed over a GIS (Geographic Information System) and designed to facilitate reaching compromises among agents such as investors, environmental groups and governmental agencies, when deciding the location and sizing of new renewable energy sources in a region. The core model of an Actor is similar to a Fuzzy Inference System of the Takagi-Sugeno type, built from a definition of preferences and levels of acceptability. An outranking method is employed to define geographical places of less conflict among the several Actors negotiating. An application to the region of La Rioja, in Spain, is described.

A hybrid genetic algorithm for assembly line balancing

Abstract
This paper presents a hybrid genetic algorithm for the simple assembly line problem, SALBP-1. The chromosome representation of the problem is based on random keys. The assignment of the operations to the workstations is based on a heuristic priority rule in which the priorities of the operations are defined by the chromosomes. A local search is used to improve the solution. The approach is tested on a set of problems taken from the literature and compared with other approaches. The computation results validate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract
A new DSP laboratory course has been included in the Electrical and Computer Engineering curriculum at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, in Portugal, since the school year of 1999/2000. This paper addresses the context and motivation underlying this new course, outlines its structure and methodology, highlights the design and goals of all DSP experiments currently proposed for the 13 weeks of the semester, and reports on the receptivity students have expressed to this elective course. The course is based on the TI C31 Starter Kit and tries to combine full use of its resources with a representative diversity of efficient digital signal processing techniques and associated application scenarios. A perspective is also given on current plans to reinforce DSP expertise at the graduate level.

Improved dataset characterisation for meta-learning

Abstract
This paper presents new measures, based on the induced decision tree, to characterise datasets for meta-learning in order to select appropriate learning algorithms. The main idea is to capture the characteristics of dataset from the structural shape and size of decision tree induced from the dataset. Totally 15 measures are proposed to describe the structure of a decision tree. Their effectiveness is illustrated through extensive experiments, by comparing to the results obtained by the existing data characteristics techniques, including data characteristics tool (DCT) that is the most wide used technique in meta-learning, and Landmarking that is the most recently developed method.
