Abstract
A new wavelength multiplexing configuration for self-referenced fiber optic intensity sensors using fiber Bragg gratings and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) couplers is investigated. First, the network multiplexing concept is characterized, and then the self-referenced intensity sensor is presented, which is the basis of each individual sensor in the network. The implemented experimental setup of the multiplexing network is described, and results are presented considering the crosstalk, resolution, and power budget of the sensing multiplexing network. Abstract
In this paper an indirect approach to the variable structure model reference adaptive control (VS-MRAC) is proposed. This approach is applied to the speed control of a three-phase induction motor. In the direct approach, the switching laws are designed for the parameters of the controller, and in this case the main difficulty is to find the bounds which must be used in the control laws. On the other hand, in the indirect approach, the switching laws are designed for the plant parameters, which are uncertain, but their bounds can be easily found, since they are related to physical parameters of the system. The idea is to design an indirect variable structure approach and to apply it to the speed control of a three-phase induction motor.

Abstract
This paper presents a strategy for applying sampling techniques to relational databases, in the context of data quality auditing or decision support processes. Fuzzy cluster sampling is used to survey sets of records for correctness of business rules. Relational algebra estimators are presented as a data quality-auditing tool.

Abstract
Logic programming provides a high-level view of programming that gives implementor; a vast latitude in what techniques to research towards obtaining the best performance for logic programs. The Emended Andorra Model was designed towards achieving reduction of the search space whilst exploiting all the available parallelism in the application. The BEAM is a first sequential implementation for the Extended Andorra Model with Implicit Control, that has been shown to obtain good results. In this work we propose the RAINBOW, a parallel execution model for the BEAM. We present a general overview of how to distribute work, propose alternative approaches towards addressing the binding problem for the EAM, and present a scheduling strategy.

AGENTS AND COMPUTATIONAL AUTONOMY: POTENTIAL, RISKS, AND SOLUTIONS
Abstract
In this paper it is discussed how organizations deal with autonomy of agents that constitute them. Based on human organizations and on their legal characterization, it is proposed a normative and rolebased model for organizations (human or not), that assumes autonomy of agents as a natural ingredient. It is discussed how an organization can work without regimenting agents behavior, but simply by describing their expected (ideal) behavior (through the deontic characterization of the roles agents hold) and fixing sanctions for agents that deviate from what is expected of them. Interaction between agents is ruled through contracts that agents are free to establish between each other. A formal model, supported by a deontic and action logic, is suggested. Although this model is in a preliminary stage, it might be an useful approach to incorporate autonomy as a natural property of agents in an organizational context.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE-AN INTERNATIONAL REVIEW
Abstract
Several supervisory authorities and governmental working groups issued corporate governance best practice codes for listed companies during the nineties. In this paper, we used a unique database that allowed us to analyse the relationship between the level of compliance of the code of best practice issued by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission and the returns of the concerned companies. By using a multifactor model, one can conclude that there is a positive relationship between the compliance of some of these recommendations and the returns that were determined. The recommendations on the structure and functioning of the executive board deserve a special attention. However, globally, CMVM's code of best practice doesn't have a systematic effect on firm returns.
