Abstract
A refractometric sensor based on a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating written by electric-arc discharges is presented. Transmission and reflective configurations for refractive index measurements are studied. It is observed that the reflective topology permits better performance compared with the transmission one, which is the approach normally utilized in the context of long-period fiber sensing. The resolution achieved in the measurement of refractive index enables the application of this sensing head structure in demanding situations, such as the measurement of the level of salinity of water. Abstract
The paper presents a study of the convergence characteristics and an assessment of the performance of the algorithm used to solve power system state estimation problem. The algorithm is studied to determine and compare the convergence patterns using several measurement sets consisting of line flows, bus injections, voltage magnitudes and line currents. The algorithm was tested on different IEEE test systems. Results related to the test with IEEE 14 bus bar system are presented.

Abstract
Several discussions concerning the improvement of engineering students' learning process take place. The use of Active Learning tools is grabbing the attention of the pedagogical community as an answer to the recent education process requirements for the new century. A debut-mother project named PESC (To Project, To Undertake, To Know How to Achieve) aimed to fulfil these needs by involving students in a hands-on experience. Within this framework, the development of an industrial engineering and management game (IMAGE) was conducted. PESC initiative shows some similarities with CDIO (Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating). However, the authors consider that this framework needs to be improved addressing other important attributes such as the capacity of identifying, evaluating and formulating problems beforehand. The argument is that PESC fulfils these requirements, based on the creation of multidisciplinary working teams under the students' leadership. Work organization and control were vital to the accomplishment of the proposed task. The project key success factors were the establishment of a direct communication and of ambitious assignments that would challenge the whole group. Moreover, detailed task scheduling, weekly meetings and weekly progress reports were implemented by the leaders. These steps induced team work, dynamism, competition and responsibility on the students, enabling the fulfilment of the ambitious deadlines.

Abstract
By measuring intensity distributions of cladding modes and using an optimization technique we show that the perturbation which forms arc-induced gratings in standard fibers is antisymmetric, while the perturbation in boron-germanium codoped fibers is symmetric. © 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract
In recent years, the pharmaceutical sector has gone through deep changes, partially due to the ageing of the population and to the increasing of costs in health care services. With margins that are getting lower and lower, the drug distribution problem to pharmacies has become much more important, particularly in large metropolitan areas. As pharmacies demand shorter delivery times, vehicle routing and scheduling problems become harder for distributors. It is recognized that the traditional system based on fixed routes does not fulfil the expectations of pharmacies and may, in some cases, be quite inefficient for distributiors. In this work, a case study has been carried out and a change of the traditional approach is proposed, by adopting a system of variable routes that are dynamically designed, based on orders that are constantly arriving along the day. A dynamic algorithm is therefore proposed, meant to be run several times a day. It has four phases: first, a clustering of the orders is performed; second, potential routes are constructed; third, a route is selected for operation; and finally, that route is subject to an improvement process. The selection of the next route to be launched may be postponed in order to take advantage of subsequent information. The algorithm has been tested in the case study, by simulating one week of operation, and by comparing the results with the plan produced by the traditional way. © Springer-Verlag 2006.

Knowledge and Technology Management in Virtual Organizations: Issues, Trends, Opportunities and Solutions
Abstract
The virtual enterprise model is an emerging approach in answer to the new requirements of the business environment, relying on dynamically-reconfigurable partnerships, with extremely high performances, strongly time-oriented while being highly focused on cost and quality, in permanent alignment with the market, and strongly supported by information and communication technology, dictating a paradigm face shift to the traditional organizational models. Networking and reconfiguration dynamics are the main characteristics of this model, requiring enabling and supporting environments, at bearable costs. Some existing technologies and Internet-based environments can partially support this organizational model, but the reconfiguration dynamics can only be assured by environments able to manage, control, and enable networking and dynamics in virtual enterprise creation/reconfiguration. Several environments are introduced in the chapter, and particular focus is given to the market of resources, an environment coping with the requirements of the virtual enterprise model. © 2007, Idea Group Inc.
