A web-based system to monitor the quality of meta-data in web portals

Abstract
We present a web-based system to monitor the quality of the meta-data used to describe content in web portals. The system implements meta-data analysis using statistical, visualization and data mining tools. The web-based system enables the site's editor to detect and correct problems in the description of contents, thus improving the quality of the web portal and the satisfaction of its users. We have developed this system and tested it on a Portuguese portal for management executives.

A framework for point-free program transformation

Abstract
The subject of this paper is functional program transformation in the so-called point-free style. By this we mean first translating programs to a form consisting only of categorically-inspired combinators, algebraic data types defined as fixed points of functors, and implicit recursion through the use of type-parameterized recursion patterns. This form is appropriate for reasoning about programs equationally, but difficult to actually use in practice for programming. In this paper we present a collection of libraries and tools developed at Minho with the aim of supporting the automatic conversion of programs to point-free (embedded in Haskell), their manipulation and rule-driven simplification, and the (limited) automatic application of fusion for program transformation.

Optimal design of work-in-process buffers

Abstract
When customers demand for very short lead-times and for a strict respect of the delivery schedules, it becomes difficult to avoid the existence of relatively large work-in-process buffers. As the buffers will also increase dramatically the production costs, their design (location and capacity) should be carefully analyzed and optimized, a task that becomes rather complex for large production systems. This paper firstly introduces a series of fundamental concepts related to the reliability of production systems. Then, the rationale of an analysis method oriented to this class of systems will be presented, together with its two main components, the modelling framework and the evaluation algorithm. The method allows analysing several issues of the design and operation of the production systems, namely the redundancy of equipment, the layout of the cells and the maintenance policies. To illustrate its practical usefulness and enlighten the kind of results that the method can provide, a numerical example concerning the design of work-in-process buffers of a just-in-time manufacturing system will be presented in the final part of the paper.

Design of an end-to-end method to extract information from tables

Abstract
This paper plans an end-to-end method for extracting information from tables embedded in documents; input format is ASCII, to which any richer fort-nat can be converted, preserving all textual and much of the layout information. We start by defining table. Then we describe the steps involved in extracting information from tables and analyse table-related research to place the contribution of different authors, find the paths research is following, and identify issues that are still unsolved. We then analyse current approaches to evaluating table processing algorithms and propose two new metrics for the task of segmenting cells/columns/rows. We proceed to design our own end-to-end method, where there is a higher interaction between different steps; we indicate how back loops in the usual order of the steps can reduce the possibility of errors and contribute to solving previously unsolved problems. Finally, we explore how the actual interpretation of the table not only allows inferring the accuracy of the overall extraction process but also contributes to actually improving its quality. In order to do so, we believe interpretation has to consider context-specific knowledge; we explore how the addition of this knowledge can be made in a plug-in/out manner, such that the overall method will maintain its operability in different contexts.

Principal component analysis as tool of characterization of quince (Cydonia oblonga Miller) jam

Abstract
Fifty-one quince jams from several different brands, commercialised in three consecutive years, traditionally prepared and industrially manufactured, were studied. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed, in order to assess the correlations between the different components of quince jam phenolics, organic acids and free amino acids. Phenolics determination was the most interesting. The differences between phenolic profiles of traditional and industrial quince jams were emphasised during PCA. Two main PC characterise the quince jam phenolic composition (54.4% of all variance): PCl (37.4%) and PC2 (17.0%). The PCl describes the differences between the contents of 3-0- and 5-0-caffeoylquinic acids and all flavonoids and the PC2 relates the contents of 4-0- and 5-0-caffeoylquinic acids against 3-0-caffeoylquinic and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acids. The results indicate that many industrial manufacturers usually use unpeeled fruits in the preparation of the jams. The PCA of phenolic compounds enabled clear discrimination between quince jams prepared with peeled and unpeeled fruits.
