GROUPWARE: DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND USE

Abstract
The production of scientific publications requires usually the participation of several authors that contribute to the final result according to their role in the work being described. Nevertheless, this is obviously a cooperative activity and requires the simultaneous presence of the collaborators or the exchange of documents and annotations through email. Cooperative editors introduced a further step in the cooperation, but the current solutions do not accommodate issues like referencing and publishing. This gap motivated us to build a platform that integrates the three main functionalities required to effectively produce scientific publications: a cooperative text editor, a cooperative reference manager and a connector to scientific digital repositories. This paper presents this solution, which we called PaperFlow and was specified with the aid of a study conducted with Portuguese and Spanish researchers, which results are also presented, with the aim of evaluating the platform requirements.

Handbook of Research on Distributed Medical Informatics and E-Health

Abstract
This chapter reports the authors' experiences regarding security of the electronic medical record (EMR). Although the EMR objectives are to support shared care and healthcare professionals' workflow, there are some barriers that prevent its successful use. These barriers comprise not only costs, regarding resources and time, but also patient / health professional relations, ICT (information and communication technologies) education as well as security issues. It is very difficult to evaluate EMR systems; however some studies already made show problems regarding usability and proper healthcare workflow modeling. Legislation to guide the protection of health information systems is also very difficult to implement in practice. This chapter shows that access control, as a part of an EMR, can be a key to minimize some of its barriers, if the means to design, develop and evaluate access control are closer to users' needs and workflow complexity. © 2009, IGI Global.

Abstract
As we observe society in our days, we can see that people live longer; this means that we have an older population. As we know, elder are more likely to have health issues. The special needs presented by elder are gaining a major concern from all of us. Another tendency of our society is the lack of time that people demonstrate and, as a consequence, the lack of time reflects when families can't take care of their own elders. Many solutions are being presented in order to solve this problem. Some of them are taking advantage of the new technology developments in body sensor network area. In this paper we proposed an architecture of a system called Elder Care. The Elder Care solution has two primary goals: monitoring vital signs, sending alerts to family and specialized help and provide a social network in order to wrap all elder to avoid social isolation. © 2008 IEEE.

GROUPWARE: DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND USE

Abstract
Nowadays a growing number of research and projects emphasize a culture of childhood that sees the child as an active participant in social life and, in particular, in the planning and decision processes of the spaces where they live most of their time. Under these projects children are asked to have a direct role on the configuration of several spaces, such as public and school playgrounds. This paper refers to a work in progress where a version control system for a multiuser virtual world is being developed to address some of the challenges that this kind of task and participants bring. Particularly this tool is being designed and prototyped to foster children's involvement in primary school activities where a class participation and consensus are requested on the several school spatial configurations.

Abstract
Over the last few years, research in Artificial Intelligence has focussed on games with incomplete information and non-deterministic moves. The game of Poker is a perfect theme for studying this subject. The best known Poker variant is Texas Hold'em that combines simple rules with a huge amount of possible playing strategies. This paper is focussed on developing algorithms for performing simple online opponent modelling in Texas Hold'em Poker enabling to select the best strategy to play against each given opponent. Several autonomous agents were developed in order to simulate typical Poker player's behaviour and an observer agent was developed, capable of using simple opponent modelling techniques, in order to select the best playing strategy against each opponent. The results obtained in realistic experiments using eight distinct poker playing agents showed the usefulness of the approach. The observer agent is clearly capable of outperforming all their counterparts in all tests performed.
