Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Problem Solving Techniques

Abstract
This chapter introduces inductive logic programming (ILP) from the perspective of search algorithms in computer science. It first briefly considers the version spaces approach to induction, and then focuses on inductive logic programming: from its formal definition and main techniques and strategies, to priors used to restrict the search space and optimized sequential, parallel, and stochastic algorithms. The authors hope that this presentation of the theory and applications of inductive logic programming will help the reader understand the theoretical underpinnings of ILP, and also provide a helpful overview of the State-of-the-Art in the domain. © 2008, IGI Global.

Abstract
In this paper, we study the effect of uplink wise on the optimality of the receiver structure proposed in [1][2]. This optimum receiver is composed by a demodulator that extracts a set of sufficient statistic, and by an ML detector that uses the demodulator output to estimate the original data, We concentrate on Intensity Modulation/Direct Detection (IM/DD) Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) uplink system when OFDM signals suffer from noise generated by the antenna and photodiode and from nonlinear distortion. The results show that for small and medium modulalion index values, the uplink noise maintains its Gaussian distribution and the optimum receiver still outperforms the conventional.

1ST WORKSHOP ON SPECIALTY OPTICAL FIBERS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Abstract
The application of hollow-core photonic crystal fibers for gas sensing is reviewed and discussed. Some problems with splicing to standard fibers and gas diffusion into the core are addressed. Current work at INESC Porto in the development of sensing heads and interrogation units is also reported.

ICEIS 2008: PROCEEDINGS OF THE TENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENTERPRISE INFORMATION SYSTEMS, VOL DISI: DATABASES AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTEGRATION

Abstract
RoboCup is a scientific and educational, international project that involves artificial intelligence, robotics and sport sciences. In these competitions, teams of all around the world participated in distinct leagues. In the begining of the Coach competition, one of RocoCup leagues, the goal of the researchers was to develop an agent (Coach that provides advices to teammates about how to act and with improve team performance. Using the resulting improved coach agent, with enhanced statistic calculation abilities, a huge amount of statistical data was gathered from the games held at Bremen 2006. This data was then stored and treated in a data warehouse system obtaining a good high level perspective/knowledge of the RoboCup simulated soccer tournament. According to the results, the team that represented our country, has a much more goal opportunities in comparison with the majority of the teams, but this team did not score many goals. In terms of more occupied regions, the best four teams in the tournament did not occupy many times the left and right wings, compared to others regions. In the future the our country team needs to develop new strategies that use these two areas preferrentialy in order to achieve better results.
