CommGate: a communal residential gateway

Abstract
Currently, the bandwidth utilization of residential broadband links is highly inefficient. Providing the means for sharing these links will increase the total bandwidth and reduce the fixed costs per client thus promoting the use of Internet services. This paper proposes a low cost communal residential gateway for sharing and remotely managing broadband access links. We first identify and characterize existing problems on residential asymmetric link sharing scenarios and then propose and evaluate the CommGate prototype that overcomes these problems. This solution contributes to an efficient broadband link sharing, a cost breakdown and an increasing Internet access dissemination, particularly in developing countries.

Abstract
This paper presents a framework for the design and implementation of learning objects using a competence-based approach. This framework is illustrated by the development of a standalone Windows application (Trilho GOA) whose primary purpose is to create standardized pedagogical contents trough the aggregation and standardization of instructional resources in several formats that can be used later on a Learning Management System (LMS) supporting SCORM 1.2. The paper contains a brief introduction to the developed software, its system architecture, main features and several pedagogical advantages for its users.

Abstract
The XENON10 experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory uses a 15 kg xenon dual phase time projection chamber to search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The detector measures simultaneously the scintillation and the ionization produced by radiation in pure liquid xenon to discriminate signal from background down to 4.5 keV nuclear-recoil energy. A blind analysis of 58.6 live days of data, acquired between October 6, 2006, and February 14, 2007, and using a fiducial mass of 5.4 kg, excludes previously unexplored parameter space, setting a new 90% C.L. upper limit for the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of 8.8x10(-44) cm(2) for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c(2), and 4.5x10(-44) cm(2) for a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/c(2). This result further constrains predictions of supersymmetric models.

Staff line detection and removal with stable paths

Abstract
Many music works produced in the past are currently available only as original manuscripts or as photocopies. Preserving them entails their digitalization and consequent accessibility in a machine-readable format, which encourages browsing, retrieval, search and analysis while providing a generalized access to the digital material. Carrying this task manually is very time consuming and error prone. While optical music recognition (OMR) systems usually perform well on printed scores, the processing of handwritten music by computers remains below the expectations. One of the fundamental stages to carry out this task is the detection and subsequent removal of staff lines. In this paper we integrate a general-purpose, knowledge-free method for the automatic detection of staff lines based on stable paths, into a recently developed staff line removal toolkit. Lines affected by curvature, discontinuities, and inclination are robustly detected. We have also developed a staff removal algorithm adapting an existing line removal approach to use the stable path algorithm at the detection stage, Experimental results show that the proposed technique outperforms well-established algorithms. The developed algorithm will now be integrated in a web based system providing seamless access to browsing, retrieval, search and analysis of submitted scores.

A Decision Support System for Planning Promotion Time Slots

Abstract
We report on the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) to plan the best assignment for the weekly promotion space of a TV station. Each product to promote has a given target audience that is best reached at specific time periods during the week. The DSS aims to maximize the total viewing for each product within its target audience while fulfilling a set of constraints defined by the user. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and successful implementation of a heuristic-based scheduling software system that has been developed for a major Portuguese TV station.

A methodology for exploring association models

Abstract
Visualization in data mining is typically related to data exploration. In this chapter we present a methodology for the post processing and visualization of association rule models. One aim is to provide the user with a tool that enables the exploration of a large set of association rules. The method is inspired by the hypertext metaphor. The initial set of rules is dynamically divided into small comprehensible sets or pages, according to the interest of the user. From each set, the user can move to other sets by choosing one appropriate operator. The set of available operators transform sets of rules into sets of rules, allowing focusing on interesting regions of the rule space. Each set of rules can also be then seen with different graphical representations. The tool is web-based and dynamically generates SVG pages to represent graphics. Association rules are given in PMML format. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
