AGENTS FOR GAMES AND SIMULATIONS: TRENDS IN TECHNIQUES, CONCEPTS AND DESIGN
Abstract
In the recent years, game engines have been increasingly used as a basis for agent-based applications and multi-agent systems, alongside traditional, more dedicated, simulation platforms. In this paper, we test and compare different control strategies for specified high-level maneuvers in aircraft within a gaming simulation environment, each aircraft represented by an independent agent, focusing on communication necessities and maneuver effectiveness. An overview of the simulation environment's capabilities, with focus on the structured experiences system, shows the potentials of this platform as a basis for the more comprehensive goals of our project, allowing for the definition and execution of cooperative missions, such as surveillance and search & rescue operations.

Abstract
In all R&D projects there's at least one phase of model verification and accuracy, and when we are working with visual information (such as pictures and video) this phase should be emphasised. When working with medical information and clinical trials the truth of automatic results must be accurate. This work is based on the need of a huge and well annotated dataset of pictures retrieved from endoscopic capsule. This datasets should be used to learn the computer vision algorithms focused on endoscopic capsule video processing, and event detection.

Abstract
Ecological models may be very complex due to the large number of physical, chemical, biological processes and variables and their interactions, leading to long simulation times. These models may be used to analyse different management scenarios providing support to decision-makers. Thus, the simultaneous simulation of different scenarios can make the process of analysis and decision quicker, provided that there are mechanisms to accelerate the generation of new scenarios and optimization of the choices between the results presented. This paper presents a new simulation platform - EcoSimNet - specially designed for environmental simulations, which allows the inclusion of intelligent agents and the introduction of parallel simulators to speed Lip and optimize the decision-making processes. Experiments were performed using EcoSimNet computational platform with an agent controlling several simulators and implementing a parallel version of the simulated annealing algorithm for optimizing aquaculture production. These experiments showed the capabilities of the framework, enabling a fast optimization process and making this work it step forward towards an agent based decision support system to optimize complex environmental problems.

Abstract
A bilevel facility location problem in which the clients choose suppliers based on their own preferences is studied. It is shown that the coopertative and anticooperative statements can be reduced to a particular case in which every client has a linear preference order on the set of facilities to be opened. For this case, various reductions of the bilevel problem to integer linear programs are considered. A new statement of the problem is proposed that is based on a family of valid inequalities that are related to the problem on a pair of matrices and the set packing problem. It is shown that this formulation is stronger than the other known formulations from the viewpoint of the linear relaxation and the integrality gap. © 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Abstract
Digital stethoscopes have been drawing the attention of the biomedical engineering community for some time now, as seen from patent applications and scientific publications. In the future, we expect 'intelligent stethoscopes' to assist the clinician in cardiac exam analysis and diagnostic, potentiating functionalities Such as the teaching of auscultation, telemedicine, and personalized healthcare. In this paper we review the most recent heart sound processing publications, discussing their adequacy for implementation in digital stethoscopes. Our results show a body of interesting and promising work, although we identify three important limitations of this research field: lack of a set of universally accepted heart-sound features, badly described experimental methodologies and absence of a clinical validation step. Correcting these flaws is vital for creating convincing next-generation 'intelligent' digital stethoscopes that the medical community can use and trust.

Abstract
We study the effect of a strong magnetic field on the properties of neutron stars with a quark-hadron phase transition. It is shown that the magnetic field prevents the appearance of a quark phase, enhances the leptonic fraction, decreases the baryonic density extension of the mixed phase and stiffens the total equation of state, including both the stellar matter and the magnetic field contributions. Two parametrizations of a density-dependent static magnetic field, increasing, respectively, fast and slowly with the density and reaching 2-4 x 10(18) G in the centre of the star, are considered. The compact stars with strong magnetic fields have maximum mass configurations with larger masses and radii and smaller quark fractions. The parametrization of the magnetic field with density has a strong influence on the star properties.
