Abstract
The amount of on-line information content is growing without apparent limits. The lack of a coherent and consistent structure for its expression leads to increasing problems in terms of desired information retrieval and rendering. Multiple initiatives have been undertaken to bring forth such a global coherence. Nonetheless, it is still unattained. The informational landscape is highly fragmented in terms of the formats of the information object (IO) and their semantic interconnection, which is still incipient. This work exploits a loose and common sense based analogy between the Internet and the brain for the development of a new and versatile, MPEG 21 based data structuring format (termed Cognitive Object Format), for the description of information objects, equating them to cerebral memories. The objective is to enable an easier and more pervasive human (machine aided) or automatic interpretation and access to IO and their meanings in order to contribute to the development of a coherent base for their declaration and structuring.

Analysis of Wireless Sensor Network Protocols in Dynamic Scenarios

Abstract
We describe an approach to the analysis of protocols for wireless sensor networks in scenarios with mobile nodes and dynamic link quality. The approach is based on the theorem proving system PVS and can be used for formal specification, automated simulation and verification of the behaviour of the protocol. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the approach, we analyse the reverse path forwarding algorithm, which is the basic technique used for diffusion protocols for wireless sensor networks. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Fabry-Perot cavity sensing structure based on a suspended-core fibre

Abstract
A fibre optic Fabry-Perot sensing structure based on suspended-core fibre is presented. The interferometric structure is formed when a small length of suspended-core fibre with three or four holes is spliced to the end of a standard single mode fibre. The sensing structure is implemented firstly for strain and temperature measurement, and secondly for refractive index measurement. The interrogation of the sensing structure is obtained for the first implementation by the wavelength variation, and for the second implementation through the fringe visibility and through the analysis of the fast Fourier transform. © 2009 SPIE.

Multimedia in Cultural Heritage Manuscripts: Integrating Description, Transcription, and Image Content

Abstract
Cultural heritage documents are often subject to digitization processes resulting in image material, even for textual contents. It is therefore common, in collections of valuable documents, to have descriptive information generated by the institutions, along with digitized images, transcriptions created by scholars, translations and even miscellaneous annotations. To offer a faceted access to the collection it is necessary to explore these diverse materials, integrate them according to a model that accounts for both metadata and the content and provide a comprehensive retrieval environment. In this work we have applied the MetaMedia multimedia database framework to a collection of ancient documents, processed the documents in their descriptive, textual, and image content and produced a browsing and searching system. The main challenges are the integrated management of metadata and content, the indexing of the image content, and the design of the browsing and searching interface where various views on the data are kept together. Abstract
This paper presents an Artificial Immune System (AIS) based on Grossman's Tunable Activation Threshold (TAT) for anomaly detection. We describe the immunological metaphor and the algorithm adopted for T-cells, emphasizing two important features: the temporal dynamic adjustment of T-cells clonal size and its associated homeostasis mechanism. We present some promising results obtained with artificially generated data sets, aiming to test the appropriateness of using TAT in dynamic changing environments, to distinguish new unseen patterns as part of what should be detected as normal or as anomalous.

Temperature independent torsion sensor based on modal interferometry in ultra high-birefringent photonic crystal fiber

Abstract
A fiber-optic sensor for torsion measurement, based on a two-LP-mode operation in ultra high birefringent photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is described. The structure of the photonic crystal fiber presents two large asymmetric holes adjacent to the core fiber. When linearly polarized light is injected in x or in y directions, respectively, two different interferometers can be obtained. In one of these cases, as torsion is applied to the ultra Hi-Bi PCF a beat between the two interferometers is formed due to the simultaneous excitation of the two polarization states. The detection technique to read the torsion sensor is based on the analysis of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which is an alternative and simple solution. The sensor exhibited reduced sensitivity to temperature and also to strain. © 2009 SPIE.
