BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS, 2009

Abstract
In today's changing environments, organizational design must take into account; the fact that business processes are incomplete by nature and that they should be managed in such a way that they do not restrain human intervention. In this paper we propose the embedding of social software features, such as collaboration and wiki-like features, in the modeling and execution tools of business processes. These features will foster people empowerment in the bottom-up design and execution of business processes. We conclude this paper by identifying some research issues about the implementation of the tool and its methodological impact on Business Process Management.

ANNALS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY

Abstract
PURPOSE: Disagreement on the interpretation of diagnostic tests and clinical decisions remains an important problem in medicine. As no strategy to assess agreement seems to be fail-safe to compare the degree of agreement, or disagreement, we propose a new information-based approach to assess disagreement. METHODS: The sum over all logarithms of possible outcomes of a variable is a valid measure of the amount of information contained in the variable. The proposed measure is based on the amount of information contained in the differences between two observations. This measure is normalized and satisfies the flowing properties: it is a metric, scaled invariant and it has differential weighting. RESULTS: Two real examples and a simulation were used to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed measure to compare the degree of disagreement. CONCLUSIONS: Used as complement to the existing methods, we believe our approach can be useful to compare the degree of disagreement among different populations. Ann Epidemiol 2010;20:555-561.

Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery - Challenges, Techniques, Applications

Abstract
In most challenging applications learning algorithms act in dynamic environments where the data is collected over time. A desirable property of these algorithms is the ability of incremental incorporating new data in the actual decision model. Several incremental learning algorithms have been proposed. However most of them make the assumption that the examples are drawn from a stationary distribution [14]. The aim of this study is to present a detection system (DSKC) for regression problems. The system is modular and works as a post-processor of a regressor. It is composed by a regression predictor, a Kalman filter and a Cumulative Sum of Recursive Residual (CUSUM) change detector. The system continuously monitors the error of the regression model. A significant increase of the error is interpreted as a change in the distribution that generates the examples over time. When a change is detected, the actual regression model is deleted and a new one is constructed. In this paper we tested DSKC with a set of three artificial experiments, and two real-world datasets: a Physiological dataset and a clinic dataset of sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea is a common disorder characterized by periods of breathing cessation (apnoea) and periods of reduced breathing (hypopnea) [7]. This is a real-world application where the goal is to detect changes in the signals that monitor breathing. The experimental results showed that the system detected changes fast and with high probability. The results also showed that the system is robust to false alarms and can be applied with efficiency to problems where the information is available over time. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract
M. T. Valdez, C. F. Agreira, C. M. Ferreira, F. P. Maciel Barbosa. Teaching, Learning and Exploring the Use of Project-Based Learning // Electronics and Electrical Engineering. - Kaunas: Technologija, 2010. - No. 9(105). - P. 117-120. Education in academic institutions of higher education is not an easy task, with engineering students needing to be competent in the contents areas as well as in a generic way. This paper describes the implementation of a strategy of the PBL model applied to design a curriculum unit of Electric Power Systems Project (EPSP) of the Electrical Engineering course. This curriculum unit aims to provide students with knowledge to design, model, analyze, and project interior and exterior lighting systems. The results show that students have really benefited from the experience of actually working as members of a team rather than learning using conventional classes.
