Abstract
This paper present a methodology to choose the distribution networks reconfiguration that presents the lower power losses. The proposed methodology is based on statistical failure and repair data of the distribution power system components and uses fuzzy-probabilistic modeling for system component outage parameters. The proposed hybrid method using fuzzy sets and Monte Carlo simulation based on the fuzzy-probabilistic models allows catching both randomness and fuzziness of component outage parameters. © 2011 IEEE.

Automatic counting the number of Collembola in digital images

Abstract
Counting the number of Collembola in digital images is a routine task in laboratories of soil ecotoxicology. This process is based on a direct visual identification of Collembola, and is consequently a time consuming task. This paper present a fully automatic system for counting the number of Collembola in digital images. The system selects the interest area of the image, detects and removes the specular reflection of the incident light, as well as the foam developed during laboratory experiment and finally identifies and counts the number of Collembola. The system performance was tested using 5 treatments with 9 or 10 replicates and 13 treatments with 4 or 5 replicates. A total of 111 images were tested and the results were compared with those obtained by manual identification. The average relative error between automatic and manual counts from multiple observations of the same treatment was 2:1%, which can be considered a good result, given that this value is below the standard deviation between multiple replicate counts. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract
The restructuring that the energy sector has suffered in industrialized countries originated a greater complexity in market players' interactions, and thus new problems and issues to be addressed. Decision support tools that facilitate the study and understanding of these markets become extremely useful to provide players with competitive advantage. In this context arises MASCEM, a multi-agent system for simulating competitive electricity markets. To provide MASCEM with the capacity to recreate the electricity markets reality in the fullest possible extent, it is essential to make it able to simulate as many market models and player types as possible. This paper presents the development of the Complex Market in MASCEM. This module is fundamental to study competitive electricity markets, as it exhibits different characteristics from the already implemented market types. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract
Electricity markets are complex environments with very particular characteristics. MASCEM is a market simulator developed to allow deep studies of the interactions between the players that take part in the electricity market negotiations. This paper presents a new proposal for the definition of MASCEM players' strategies to negotiate in the market. The proposed methodology is multiagent based, using reinforcement learning algorithms to provide players with the capabilities to perceive the changes in the environment, while adapting their bids formulation according to their needs, using a set of different techniques that are at their disposal. © 2011 IEEE.

From Instruction Traces to Specialized Reconfigurable Arrays

Abstract
This paper presents an offline tool-chain which automatically extracts loops (Mega blocks) from Micro Blaze instruction traces and creates a tailored Reconfigurable Processing Unit (RPU) for those loops. The system moves loops from the CPU to the RPU transparently, at runtime, and without changing the executable binaries. The system was implemented in an FPGA and for the tested kernels measured speedups ranged between 3.9x and 18.2x for a Micro Blaze CPU without cache. We estimate speedups from 1.03x to 2.01x, when comparing to the best estimated performance achieved with a single Micro Blaze. © 2011 IEEE.

Fiber-Optic Inclinometer Based on Taper Michelson Interferometer

Abstract
A compact fiber-optic inclinometer based on a fiber-taper Michelson interferometric sensor is constructed and demonstrated. The sensor consist of a single symmetrically taper waist of 80 mu m distanced 30 mm from the single-mode fiber end-tip right-angled cleaved. The amplitude of the bending angle of the fiber taper interferometer is obtained by passive interferometric interrogation based on the generation of two quadrature phase-shifted signals from two fiber Bragg gratings with different resonant wavelengths. Optical phase-to-bending sensitivity of similar to 1.13 rad/degree and a bend angle resolution of similar to 0.014 degree/root Hz were achieved.
