Abstract
This paper presents FIEEV - Fault Injection Environment for Electric Vehicles, a Matlab/Simulink-based simulator environment for evaluating the fault impacts on vehicle stability in electrical vehicles. FIEEV makes it possible to simulate the temporal behavior of the faults and to study its effects on loss of vehicle's performance. Simulation results are presented to prove the validity of the presented framework. © 2012 IEEE.

Knowledge and Process Management
Abstract
Numerous projects are considered complex because of the number of stakeholders, the diversity of skills, and the uncertainty involved, requiring accurate information retrieval and management of the social interactions between different participants leading to efficient knowledge sharing. This paper reports the findings of an empirical study on knowledge sharing barriers and research and development (R&D) activities that occur in the context of complex project management. The study presents issues, difficulties, and practices acknowledged by project managers related to knowledge sharing and R&D (focused on activities that involve cooperation and collaboration). Particularly, we point out the following major knowledge sharing barriers: codification process, inadequate information technology, lack of initiative and strategy by the workers, and lack of time and resources. We also explained the following practices and issues regarding the collaborative R&D activities: information exchange and retrieval, communication barriers, interdependence of knowledge and skills, and different technical terminologies. We intend to contribute to the understanding of the work carried out in the context of complex projects to improve the management practices and the information technology platforms to support them. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd..

SENSORS AND ACTUATORS B-CHEMICAL
Abstract
A reflective multimode interference based-fiber optic sensor is described, aimed at measuring refractive index variations by means of intensity variation based on the fiber tip-interaction concept. The sensing head is a section of a multimode fiber, spliced to a single-mode fiber at the input end; its characteristics are studied when two multimode fibers, with distinct core diameters (viz. 50 and 105 mu m), are considered. The multimode fiber end face is placed in contact with the liquid sample, so as to provide a refractive index measurement via variation in amplitude of the interference spectral peaks - which is essentially insensitive to temperature changes. Therefore, the proposed configuration permits measurement of refractive index variations free from system temperature cross-sensitivity effects. Resolutions of 2.2 x 10(-4) RIU and 3.8 x 10(-4) RIU, for multimode fiber tips with core diameters of 50 mu m and 105 mu m, respectively, could be achieved.

Abstract
This paper describes a set of mathematical formulations designed to include uncertainties modeled by fuzzy numbers in DC OPF studies. These approaches enhance and generalize an initial formulation and solution algorithm described in several papers co-authored by the second author. The approaches described in this paper adopt multiparametric optimization techniques in order to translate to the results the uncertainties affecting loads, for one side, the generation costs, for another, and also both of them in a simultaneous way. These approaches can be very useful nowadays given the uncertainties and volatility affecting data required to run several studies. They can also be the basis for the computation of nodal short time marginal prices reflecting these uncertainties. This paper also includes results obtained from a Case Study based on the IEEE 24 bus test system.

Abstract
The TIMEMESH game, developed in the scope of the European Project SELEAG, is an educational game for learning history, culture and social relations. It is supported by an extensible, online, multi-language, multi-player, collaborative and social platform for sharing and acquiring knowledge of the history of European regions. The game has been already used, with remarkable success, in different European countries like Portugal, Spain, England, Slovenia, Estonia and Belgium. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract
Spreadsheets are increasingly used as programming languages, in the construction of large and complex systems. The fact is that spreadsheets, being a highly flexible framework, lack important programming language features such as abstraction or encapsulation. This flexibility, however, comes with a price: spreadsheets are populated with significant amounts of errors. One of the approaches that try to overcome this problem advocates the use of model-driven spreadsheet development: a spreadsheet model is defined, from which a concrete spreadsheet is generated. Although this approach has been proved effective in other contexts, still it needs to accommodate for future evolution of both the model and its instance, so that they remain synchronized at all moments. In this paper, we propose a pair of transformation sets, one working at the model level and the other at the instance level, such that each transformation in one set is related to a transformation in the other set. With our approach, we ensure model/data compliance while allowing for model and data evolution.
