Conceptual clustering with generalization by intervals [Classification Conceptuelle avec Généralisation par Intervalles]

Abstract
This paper deals with hierarchical or pyramidal conceptual clustering methods, where each formed cluster corresponds to a concept, i.e., a pair (extent, intent). We consider data presenting real or interval-valued numerical values, ordered values and/or probability/frequency distributions on a set of categories. Concepts are obtained by a Galois connection with generalisation by intervals, which allows dealing with different variable types on a common framework. In the case of distribution data, the obtained concepts are more homogeneous and more easily interpretable than those obtained by using the maximum and minimum operators previously proposed. A measure of generality of a concept is defined similarly for all these variable types. An example illustrates the proposed method.

Abstract
The main objective of this work is to describe the Virtual Center for the Rehabilitation of Road Accident Victims - VICERAVI and the serious games it includes for the purpose of neuropsychological rehabilitation. The validation of the VICERAVI as a rehabilitation system involves 30 participants of both sexes, with brain injury due to road accidents. The applicability and the benefits of virtual worlds for a holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation will be tested using virtual reality (OpenSimulator) to simulate tasks of everyday life,,enabling participants to perform cognitive and social skills training through their avatars. The progresses of this group will se compared with a group of conventional neuropsychological rehabilitation. The main innovation of the work is the possibility if administering neuropsychological rehabilitation at distance, via ecological virtual environments. Moreover, the paper discusses also relevant criteria and issues in respect to the use of serious games, simulation and virtual environments in rehabilitation.

OPTICAL SENSING AND DETECTION II

Abstract
In this work, a novel high birefringent (HiBi) fiber loop mirror sensor based on a "figure-of-eight" constructed with a 3x3 fiber coupler, is presented. The "figure-of-eight" is formed by two fiber loop mirrors (FLM's) made by four of the six fiber arms of the 3x3 fiber coupler. The other two remaining fiber ports of the 3x3 coupler are used as input and output fibers of the compound sensor. The sensing head is located in the one of the FLM and it is formed by a spliced section of HiBi elliptical core fiber. The spectral response of this "figure-of-eight" configuration presents two interference optical signals that can be easily tuned by a polarization controller that is located in the other FLM, and which is made only of standard singlemode fiber from two arms of the 3x3 coupler. The sensor head was optically characterized both in temperature and strain, showing wavelength dependence sensitivities of -0.23 nm/degrees C and - 2.6 pm/mu epsilon, for temperature and strain, respectively. It is noticed that these sensitivities are practically the same for the two interference signals. Future work will explore the possibility to use the singlemode FLM to interrogate the sensor head made by HiBi fiber section, and providing elimination of phase fluctuations that can occur, increasing its potential for remote sensing applications.

Abstract
This paper presents two initiatives run by groups of engineering students at the University of Porto: the Microelectronics Students' Group and BioStar. These groups are student-led initiatives that promote different scientific fields through self-guided projects. Both experiences have proven to be very successful in increasing the undergraduate student's interest in science and technology. This work reports the activities, organization and main methodologies employed by these groups, which can be seen as successful approaches to enhance the technical curriculum of students. © 2012 IEEE.
