Validation of a Single RGB-D Camera for Gait Assessment of Polyneuropathy Patients

Abstract
Motion analysis systems based on a single markerless RGB-D camera are more suitable for clinical practice than multi-camera marker-based reference systems. Nevertheless, the validity of RGB-D cameras for motor function assessment in some diseases affecting gait, such as Transthyretin Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP), is yet to be investigated. In this study, the agreement between the Kinect v2 and a reference system for obtaining spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters was evaluated in the context of TTR-FAP. 3-D body joint data provided by both systems were acquired from ten TTR-FAP symptomatic patients, while performing ten gait trials. For each gait cycle, we computed several spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters. We then determined, for each parameter, the Bland Altman's bias and 95% limits of agreement, as well as the Pearson's and concordance correlation coefficients, between systems. The obtained results show that an affordable, portable and non-invasive system based on an RGB-D camera can accurately obtain most of the studied gait parameters (excellent or good agreement for eleven spatiotemporal and one kinematic). This system can bring more objectivity to motor function assessment of polyneuropathy patients, potentially contributing to an improvement of TTR-FAP treatment and understanding, with great benefits to the patients' quality of life.

Fluids of light in atomic systems: from superfluidity to quantum simulations

Abstract
As quantum-driven processes and properties start to shape the future of technology, quantum simulations appear as a crucial piece of the puzzle, acting both as building blocks and catalysts for the improvement of the understanding of unique quantum features. In essence, they can be understood as a class of prototype experiments that allow a study of quantum properties in a controllable environment. In this context, quantum fluids of light are one of the strongest candidates for this role as coherent behavior is easily accessible and not hidden by detrimental thermal noise usually present in more common quantum systems. In this work we explore the underlying theory of quantum fluids of light in propagating geometries through the hydrodynamic interpretation of light, where photons behave as interacting particles in the presence of a nonlinear medium. Exploiting the highly controllable optical properties of atomic systems and their enhanced nonlinear properties related to quantum coherence phenomena, we discuss how they can be used to set a tunable platform for quantum simulations. As examples, we demonstrate a series of quantum features of this light fluid in the form of superfluidic-like behaviors, ranging from the more common and experimentally confirmed suppressed scattering, drag-force cancellation and Bogoliubov-like dispersion relation for the elementary excitations, to other interesting phenomena yet to be explored, such as the case of persistent currents.

Scalable High-Gaussicity Split-Block Diagonal Horn Antenna for Integration with Sub-THz Devices

Abstract
In this paper we propose a high-gaussicity spline-profiled horn antenna, which is scalable in length and aperture to achieve higher gains whilst retaining a high Gaussian efficiency. A novel approach is used where a PSO is used for optimizing the spline, using the gaussicities at the operating frequencies as the objective function, which further improves side-lobe level and cross-polarization when compared to the state-of-the-art. With the proposed method, which was validated through FEM simulations in HFSS, reflection coefficients below -15 dB, gains greater than 25 dBi and gaussicities above 91% were obtained in the entire WR-3 band.

Evaluation of different body tracking configurations in the sense of presence and embodiment

Abstract
Innovations in virtual reality have boosted their use for business purposes and personal consumption. The main objective of this technology is to transport the user to virtual environments. The use of avatars to replace the user's body in these environments increases the levels of presence and embodiment of the user. Through the inverse kinematics it is possible to animate the avatars according to the data obtained in sensors scattered around the user's body, replicating the movements in a avatar. These sensors can vary in number offering different levels of fidelity in the tracking of the human body. In this paper, we study the impact of the number of sensors used in the presence of the user and in the embodiment of the avatar, using three, five and six tracking points. The results show that there is no statistically significant differences in presence nor in any of its sub-scale, however one can observe a positive trend in the 6-points conditions. As for embodiment, the results show that there is statistically signifficant differences in some of presence sub-scales, namelly tactile sensation, response and in the embodiment as a whole.

FDI in small states and unattractive markets: the case of Sao Tome and Principe

Abstract
Studies on Small States, 'unattractive' markets, namely those from Africa, are very scarce. Sao Tome and Principe (STP), a Small State, insular economy, has had considerable momentum in attracting FDI in the last decade albeit its geographical and demographic constraints and relative weak economic growth. The current study uncovers the potential determinants of FDI in unattractive markets using STP as a case study. Based on (robust) logistic estimations on a sample of 56 Portuguese companies that have trade relations with African countries, we show that in the case of Small States economies and unattractive markets, the relevance of institutional factors and resource seeking strategies surpass internalisation and location factors related to market size and dynamics. We further uncovered that foreign companies' characteristics, namely size and (general) human capital, are critical in explaining companies' likelihood to invest in an 'unattractive' market.
