INESC TEC contributed to European position paper calling for stronger FP10 support for energy systems

INESC TEC, together with 26 other organisations, published a position paper calling on the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Member States to reinforce support for collaborative research, development and innovation (R&D&I) programmes focused on power system components and grid optimisation technologies. The position paper Securing Europe's Electrified Future through RD&I in Electric Power System Components is available as an open-access publication (here) and has been endorsed by the EERA Joint Programme Smart Grids, featuring INESC TEC is a member.

INESC TEC's open-source software in the energy domain gains a European dimension

From the operation of electricity grids to the forecasting of renewable energy production, through the interoperability of distributed energy resources and demand-side flexibility, INESC TEC has been strengthening its commitment to developing open-source solutions for the energy sector. Currently, three open-source projects are part of the Linux Foundation Energy ecosystem — one of the most relevant international communities dedicated to the development of open-source software for energy systems — whilst a fourth technological output is already being used by the Elia Group, operator of the electricity systems in Belgium and Germany.

INESC TEC travels to Brussels to sign the launch of the AI.grids project, part of the European Commission's Tech Sovereignty Package

Forty-eight partners - ranging from European electricity grid operators to research institutes and industry players - have come together to develop sovereign European AI models aimed at improving the management and planning of electricity grids. This is AI.grids, a European initiative officially launched in the first week of June at an event organised by the European Commission, where several other initiatives were also signed, all related to the Tech Sovereignty Package put forward by Brussels.

INESC TEC joins Technical Advisory Group to consolidate the security and flexibility of Portugal’s electricity system

Clara Gouveia, member of INESC TEC’s Board, and João Peças Lopes, Director of the Institute, took part (at the invitation of the Ministry of Environment and Energy) in the Technical Advisory Group (GAT) created by the Portuguese Government to propose concrete measures to support the security and flexibility of the National Electricity System (SEN) in light of the sector’s ongoing evolution. The group’s conclusions were presented in late April 2026.

INESC TEC contributed to independent UK review on AI in electricity networks

Who is shaping the path towards the safe use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in electricity networks? What technical and regulatory challenges do we need to overcome? And what conditions are required to turn potential into real impact in the energy sector? These and other questions were discussed at a meeting organised by the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero - the government body responsible for energy policy and the climate transition. Ricardo Bessa, researcher and coordinator of the Power & Energy Systems area at INESC TEC contributed with his knowledge and expertise.

Portugal and the United States of America (USA) came together to discuss the digital and energy transition, bringing academia, industry, regulatory bodies and policymakers from both countries to a closed-door seminar at Stanford (California). Vehicles of the future equipped with solar panels

Electric vehicles with solar panels? It is possible - and INESC TEC is involved. The European project SOLAR-MOVE aims to develop, integrate and demonstrate photovoltaic (PV) solutions in electric vehicles, as well as in charging infrastructures. The goal is to accelerate the transition to more sustainable mobility and reduce CO₂ emissions.
