Countries adopt policies that attract foreign multinationals, stimulate industrial clustering and foster innovation. This book links these topical issues, examining activities of multinational enterprises alongside the efficiency, appropriateness and sufficiency of such policies. With new empirical evidence, it makes practical proposals throughout.

Recent studies conclude that human capital should be a high priority because it is a key growth input, particularly in an increasingly knowledge-based economy and an important lever of social cohesion policy. However, country-specific studies involving human capital and economic performance are scarce both for Portugal and for other countries. The small number of such studies is explained to a large extent by the increased complexity and difficulty of estimating continuous time series for human capital stock giving data paucity. This article tries to facilitate the emergence of further empirical works on the relation between human capital and long-term economic growth by providing an improved measure of the stock of human capital for the Portuguese economy from 1960 up to 2001. © Intellect Ltd 2005.

Abstract
Despite the important existing contributions on public and political entrepreneurship, research on these topics is still scarce, particularly at the empirical level. Studies on political entrepreneurship have usually focused on the biography of entrepreneurial leaders and the analysis of case studies. Thus, a parameterisation of the variables and relationships that permit quantitative empirical research is in demand. The present study adds to the empirical literature on public and political entrepreneurship by proposing to examine and intersect several dimensions of political entrepreneurship at the local level: funds, activities, infrastructure, and global. Based on responses gathered from 108 Portuguese municipalities, we found that both individual - gender, previous occupational status, age, and managerial competencies of the mayor - and contextual conditions - accessibilities, educational endowments, and business structure of the municipalities, namely the share of medium and large firms - are key determinants of local political entrepreneurship. © The Author(s) 2012.

Abstract
There are very few (published) accounts of editorial misconduct, and those that do exist are almost exclusively focused on medicine-related areas. In the present article we detail a case of editorial misconduct in a rather underexplored domain, the social sciences. This case demonstrates that although legal systems provide different instruments of protection to avoid, compensate for, and punish misconduct on the part of journal editors, the social and economic power unbalance between authors and publishers suggests the importance of alternative solutions before or instead of bringing a lawsuit to court. It puts forward strong arguments in favour of the need for effective regulatory bodies so as to achieve and maintain a culture of research integrity by all involved in the process. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
