EUROPEAN PLANNING STUDIES

Abstract
The literature focusing on rural and urban entrepreneurship has so far overlooked the conditions in which different institutional contexts can affect firms' performance. The present study addressed this gap by investigating the extent to which institutional factors impact distinctively the performance of rural and urban newly created ventures. Based on data gathered through a direct questionnaire, we obtained 408 responses from newly created ventures located in Portuguese business incubators and science parks. Resorting to econometric binary (logit) models, we found that certain institutional factors, namely EU policy support, financial support from other sources than not banks, business advice for starting up/ ongoing activities, and collaboration to access new markets, are critical for new venture export performance, particularly those located in rural settings. To a larger extent than for urban, rural new venture economic-related performance positive and significantly depend on central government policy support, close relatives' role models, and technological support at the R&D collaboration level. Given the relevance of embeddedness-related factors in rural municipalities, public authorities should follow strategies that involve a growing connection between rural entrepreneurs and a variety of actors from industry, academia and the public and private sectors in order to foster newly created venture performance.

Rural Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Digital Era

Abstract
Research on the relationship between entrepreneurship and context has gained considerable attention in recent years. However, this stream of literature has yet to adequately address the topic of entrepreneurship in rural areas. This chapter intends to fill this gap by investigating the extent to which technological-related factors affect the performance of new ventures located in rural and urban areas. Based on a sample of 408 newly created ventures located in Portuguese business incubators (BIs) and science parks (SPs), and employing logistic estimations, two main conclusions were derived. They are 1) support from BIs/SPs matters the most to the export and global innovation performance of new ventures located in rural areas and 2) support from universities and other higher education institutions, and the regularity of research and development (R&D) collaborations between new ventures and R&D institutions are more relevant to the turnover and innovation performance of new ventures located in urban areas than those in rural areas. © 2021, IGI Global.

Abstract
Purpose Considering the differences between rural and urban spaces, through the theoretical framework developed, the purpose of this paper is to uncover and rationalize the differences between rural and urban new ventures in terms of the environment surrounding the new venture, their general characteristics (e.g. sector, size) and export/economic performance. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical framework is empirically assessed resorting to exploratory statistical analysis based on data collected from a questionnaire survey responded by 408 new ventures headquartered in Portuguese business incubators and science parks. The data collected were treated with the Software Package for the Social Sciences. Findings The results evidence that rural and urban new ventures differ in terms of generic characteristics, namely sector, size and collaborators' human capital. Additionally, they differ concerning export and economic performance as well in relation to the perception of the municipality support. Originality/value The present study innovatively contributes to uncover the role of rural and urban context in entrepreneurship and adds to the scanty empirical literature in the area.

Abstract
Introduction: Foreign languages are of vital importance in tourism today, particularly in rural tourism. If we consider that more than a third of the demand for TER in the national territory is made up of foreigners (INE, 2017), we understand the importance of foreign language skills. Moreover, the Portuguese quality standard of the TER states that promoters of the activity must have at least knowledge of a foreign language. If this is unquestionable, it is also true that in the universe of existing enterprises, several indications are that foreign language competence presents itself as a fragility for many enterprises. Objetives: Taking as a reference a rural tourism enterprise, the objective of this study is to explore the importance of foreign languages in the success of tourism activity in rural areas. Methods: In order to allow a deeper analysis, a case study methodology is used. In addition to a semi-structured interview, we use documentary information and the observation of the languages used in the online comments (in TRIPadvisor and booking.com). Results: In the interview the importance of foreign languages was highlighted. Many of the comments online are made in a foreign language. Conclusion: Competence in foreign languages is vital to the success of rural tourism. © 2019, Polytechnic Institute of Viseu. All rights reserved.

PASOS-REVISTA DE TURISMO Y PATRIMONIO CULTURAL

Abstract
With the changes manifested in rural areas over the last few decades, the preservation of these territories and their people is associated with the ability of the local population to innovate, often using endogenous resources. Traditional Arts and Crafts (TACs), allied to other local economic activities, constitute instruments of local socioeconomic regeneration. Starting from a research based on the websites of the fourteen municipalities of the interior region Viseu Dao Lafoes in Portugal, complemented with analysis of bibliographic information regarding the initiatives described in the same websites, in this study, it is intended to observe what is the dis-semination that is made by the websites of the municipalities in the region and explore the innovation imprinted by these initiatives. The results suggest that despite the existence of notable examples of TACs initiatives in the region, with a clear focus on innovation - product, process, organizational and marketing, the promotion carried out by the municipalities is (still) modest. Taking into account the artisanal nature of these initiatives themselves, the scarcity of human and financial resources in the municipalities where they are located, but their contribution to strengthening the regional identity and to tourism, institutional support, namely in terms of the promotion that is carried out and animation practices involving artisans, must be reinforced.
