Re-Engineering Manufacturing for Sustainability - Proceedings of the 20th CIRP International Conference on Life Cycle Engineering
Abstract
Nowadays achieving sustainable development is a global concern. The issue of unsustainability can be related to population growth and excessive consumption of natural resources. To tackle these issues, several management tools and methodologies have been developed in the last years, to assess, analyse and improve the environmental and economic performance of production systems. This work presents an approach based value stream mapping in order to assess and improve energy efficiency, environmental performance and financial performance of a production system. The developed approach can be applied to any industry or production system, where all the unit processes involved are identified and the inputs/outputs of each unit system quantified and easily perceived. Key environmental performance indicators and the corresponding eco-efficiency ratios arise as outcomes of this approach, in which a Multi-Layer Stream Mapping (MSM) with visual management attributes is created.

Abstract
The integrated planning of several activities implicated in paper production can lead to remarkable gains in terms of raw materials and resource usage. However, activities such as order assignment, production sequencing and cutting planning are usually addressed separately while ignoring the interactions among these processes. But the quality of the solution resulting from the juxtaposition of the partial solutions is not guaranteed, and may have a significant impact in terms of inefficiency of global performance. This article considers production planning in a pulp and paper industry in order to meet a set of orders of diverse types of products, admitting the possibility of producing simultaneously in two or more paper machines with their own features. The developed approach, ASC-3Steps, considers not only cutting optimisation but also extends itself to the processes of assigning orders to paper machines and production sequencing at each machine. Minimisation of wasted paper is assumed to be the overall goal. A set of computational results based on real data is presented.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide practical justification for performance measurement and management within a collaborative business network. The basic performance measurement indicators are elaborated within the scope of this research. Design/methodology/approach: Performance measurement techniques are highlighted through the application of an ICT-based solution approach, with special focus on business collaboration among small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Findings: From the basic need to measure the performance of individual partners within a business network, this research proposes a generic framework and process flow with the objective of evaluating the individual partners in terms of various performance indicators such as key success factors (KSF), key performance factors (KPF) and key performance indicators (KPI). The outcomes from this framework or process flow will help partners in the network to build valuable trust, cooperation and coordination. Originality/value: The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the methodological approach of measuring the performance through identifying and prioritizing the performance indicators (KSF, KPF, KPI) among collaborative partners and to highlight their importance for successful business operations. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

JOURNAL OF TRANSPORT GEOGRAPHY
Abstract
This paper applies network analysis to study the evolution of aviation networks. It takes a different approach from previous research that usually only explores airline networks. The aviation network of the airports of Lisbon, Faro and Porto, is modelled using the supply of seats and the passenger demand between 2001 and 2010. This analysis is complemented with a study of the commercial evolution of the three airports. It is noticeable the impact of low-cost carriers in the evolution of the configuration of the network over time. A de-concentration effect is also shown to occur, due to the interaction between airport and airline decisions that favour network development. The results of the analysis highlight how critical it has become for airport managers to assess and satisfy the real requirements of the different types of airlines, in order to reduce uncertainty and increase traffic.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose a multiobjective local search metaheuristic for a mean-risk multistage capacity investment problem with process flexibility, irreversibility, lumpiness and economies of scale in capacity costs. In each period, discrete decisions concerning the investment in capacity expansion, and continuous decisions concerning the utilization of the available capacity to satisfy demand are considered. We solve the capacity utilization problems with linear programming, in order to find the minimum capacity for each resource with the other resources remaining unchanged, this way providing information on the feasibility of the discrete investment decisions. Conditional value-at-risk is considered as a risk measure. Results of a computational study are presented, that show the approach is capable of obtaining high-quality approximations to the efficient sets, with a modest computational effort.
