As propriedades temporais das orações infinitivas completivas e finais com para em Português Europeu

Authors

Abstract
In this paper we investigate three different types of infinitive constructions involving para in European Portuguese, viz. purpose clauses, complement clauses in which para behaves as a true complementizer and complement clauses in which para behaves as a preposition pertaining to the main sentence. We begin with a brief characterization of the Portuguese simple infinitive, arguing that, in appropriate conditions, it exhibits defective temporal properties that are, nonetheless, non-specified whenever another component in the sentence ascribes temporal information to the infinitive clause. Then we compare the three constructions under analysis: although there are clear divergences in their semantic behaviour, we observe that in all cases the situation represented by the infinitive clause is systematically located in an interval that follows its Temporal Perspective Point provided by the main clause. In order to account for this regularity, we propose that, in these contexts, (i) the infinitive is non-specified regarding its temporal features and (ii) the lexical properties of para are responsible for the posteriority reading stated above.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the semantic behavior of adjectives that have been designated as temporal and aspectual in the literature, regarding the readings they can display. For this purpose, sixteen of these adjectives were selected and fifty occurrences of each one were randomly chosen and investigated. Overall, we observed a significant variety of readings associated with all the adjectives under scrutiny, which to greater or lesser degrees can express temporal, aspectual, temporo-aspectual values, and readings of qualificative and relational adjectives. This diversity of possible readings raises problems for proposals that intend to classify this group of adjectives in a static manner (i.e., without considering the context).

Abstract
In this paper, we put forward a semantic analysis of constructions of prepositional phrases introduced by the preposition para with a locative meaning combined with the verbs ser, estar and ficar. In this proposal, we characterise these constructions regarding the properties individual-level/ stage-level, modal reading, and vagueness of the location, as well as restrictions imposed on the subject related to some lexical semantic features, in particular [movable] and [animated] features. Additionally, we contrast these constructions to the ones introduced by the preposition em (typically locative), revealing to what extent they differ from each other.

Como-gerund clauses in European Portuguese: figuring out the riddle

Abstract
Previous literature on the typology of gerund clauses in Portuguese has overlooked a peculiar type of clauses which are always introduced by como ( 'as' ) and display an array of characteristics that set them apart from all other gerund clauses (and from other, somehow similar, constructions in different languages). In this paper, we provide an in-depth syntactic and semantic characterisation of these como-gerund clauses and the contexts in which they arise, highlighting their similarities and differences regarding other constructions, namely resultative and depictive secondary predicates. We put forward a proposal to deal with their syntactic configurations and the restrictions they exhibit. We also propose that como is obligatory in these clauses because it marks a type-shift operation, which gives como gerund clauses a predicative interpretation, usually found in the nominal domain.
