THE EPS@ISEP PROGRAMME: A GLOBALISATION AND INTERNATIONALISATION EXPERIENCE

Abstract
Higher Education Institutions (HEI) design and implement globalisation and internationalisation policies to promote the image, expand influence and increase both the number and quality of staff and students. This is especially important for engineering schools competing for the reduced cohort of motivated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) applicants available yearly. Moreover, to train future engineers, engineering education needs to depart from the traditional teacher-centred paradigm. Student-centred learning is central to maintain high student motivation and to drive the development of hard (scientific and technological) and soft (inter-personal) skills. For students to develop these 21st-century engineering skills, today’s curriculums must embed student-centred pedagogical methods, address the design and implementation of solutions guided by ethics and sustainability, and expose undergraduates to multicultural multidisciplinary teamwork, under strong efficiency constraints.The European Project Semester (EPS) is a project-based, international teamwork initiative, that replaces the design capstone semester of undergraduate engineering degrees. It is offered by a network of 19 HEI located in 12 different European countries. The network develops transnational projects together and exchanges students, staff, ideas, and best practices, expanding the influence of the providers. EPS at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (EPS@ISEP) runs during the spring semester. It provides 30 European Credit Transfer System Units (ECTU), with 20?ECTU assigned to the project module and 10?ECTU equally divided by five support modules: Energy and Sustainable Development, Ethics and Deontology, Foreign Language and Culture, Marketing and Communication, and Project Management and Teamwork. The programme is offered to international and local students, but during its 12-year existence most students were international. The students are placed in teams considering psychological profiles. The multiculturalism and the diversity of skills within teams also foster a more inclusive and enriching learning experience. The sustainability and ethics objectives are requirements to be considered in the solution design and in the choice of technologies and components for the project implementation. The weekly project meetings between the teams and the coaching panel (7 teachers from 6 different departments), are not only pivotal to the project-based learning process, but promote the internal dialogue between departments and scientific areas. The reduced project budget provides a strong creative stimulus, while reinforcing the sustainability criteria, since turnkey solutions and waste are incompatible with a constrained bill of materials. Besides the positive effect of the programme on student training/education, as shown by the grades and the projects' documentation, EPS@ISEP has strongly influenced the teacher's skills and performance, as attested by the number of programme-related publications and its influence on other courses and modules offered by ISEP. EPS@ISEP is an effective low-cost programme that acts as a testbed and catalyst in the process of bringing engineering education into the 21st century, following sound ethical and sustainability criteria. EPS@ISEP contributes to the globalisation and internationalisation of ISEP as well as to the dissemination and adoption of best practices in engineering education.

Motivating Safe Street Crossings – An EPS@ISEP 2024 Project

Abstract
Pedestrian safety is a pressing subject in urban areas. The disorderly sharing of streets and roads between pedestrians and vehicles leads to potentially serious accidents for pedestrians. This student project aims to tackle the issue by placing an interactive gaming device at traffic lights. SMASHY by Stempe Safety offers pedestrians an amusing and active way to discourage jaywalking. The multipurpose solution features a smashing game with buttons on one side and a screen displaying useful information on the other side. While the traffic light remains red for pedestrians, the module buttons light up and the players can start smashing the buttons as fast as possible, until the light turns green and consequently, the game ends. Ultimately, the modules are connected to an app where, if desired by the player, scores can be tracked and difficulty can vary based on user performance. Promoting Fun and Social Interaction in Public Spaces – An EPS@ISEP 2023 Project

Abstract
In the spring of 2023, a team of European Project Semester (EPS) students enrolled at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) chose to foster socialisation in urban spaces. Public spaces are ideal sites to promote social interaction and community involvement. The aim of this project is then to use such places to divert attention from smartphones by promoting physical social interaction. In recent years, the combination of interactive games and technology has emerged as a potential strategy to increase the use and allure of public areas. The proposed solution, named Shift it, is a puzzle game that combines technology with old school gaming, providing a fun and unique socialising experience. The game, to be installed in public areas, has as key features inclusiveness (invites all people to play), fun (creates a healthy competitive setup) and empathy (creates puzzles by taking and scrambling user pictures). This paper presents the proposed design, which was based on state-of-the-art, ethics, market and sustainability analyses, followed by the development and testing of a proof-of-concept prototype. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Smart Pill Dispenser for Children - An EPS@ISEP 2024 Project

Abstract
People around the globe struggle with health issues requiring regular medication. Children, in particular, suffer more and more from chronic illnesses. In 2024, a team of six EPS@ISEP students chose to design a solution for this problem, followed by the assembly and testing of the corresponding proof-of-concept prototype. The aim was to design a solution for children to take the right medication, at the right time and in the right dose, in a pleasant and engaging way, based on technical, ethical, sustainability and market analyses. Focusing on children between the ages of 8 and 12, the team decided to incorporate a motivational system based on rewards to ensure that they take their medication correctly. The outcome is billy, a pill dispenser controlled via an app which allows carers to plan doses and release rewards, and children to autonomously take their medication. The system dispenses up to 21 doses of medication to the child through fingerprint authentication, and photographs the child taking the medication to reassure carers.

Breeding Endangered Beetles - An EPS@ISEP 2024 Project

Abstract
Habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use are key threats affecting beetle populations. This paper describes Scarabreed, a project that contributes to mitigate the beetle decline crisis. It was carried out by a team of six European students from different engineering fields and nationalities within the European Project Semester (EPS) at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), a project-based and teamwork learning framework. The designed solution - the Beetle Breeder Version 2 (BBV2) - consists of a smart modular vivarium created especially for beetle breeding. It monitors and controls relevant habitat parameters and offers two user-friendly interfaces (on-device and a Web application). The innovative modular structure of the vivarium allows easy scaling, customisation, and transportation. As a whole, the project offers significant environmental benefits: (i) facilitates the captive breeding of endangered beetle species, promoting population restoration efforts; (ii) fosters, as an educational tool, youth and general public awareness about the crucial role beetles play in ecosystems; and (iii) adopts eco-efficient and responsible business practices by following ethics and sustainability driven design and marketing.

Algae and Fish Farming - An EPS@ISEP 2022 Project

Abstract
The European Project Semester (EPS) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) is a capstone engineering design program where students, organised in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, create a solution for a proposed problem, bearing in mind ethical, sustainability and market concerns. The project proposals are usually aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). New sustainable food production methods are essential to cope with the continuous population growth and aligned with SDG2 and SDG12. In this context, this paper describes the research and work done by a team of Erasmus students enrolled in EPS@ISEP during the spring of 2022. Since sustainable algae farming can be a suitable source of food, the team's goal was the design and develop a proof-of-concept prototype, named GREEN center dot flow, of a symbiotic aquaponic system to farm algae and fish. The smart GREEN center dot flow concept comprises a modular structure and an app for control and supervision. The proposed design was driven by state-of-the-art research, targeted to a specific market niche based on a market analysis, and considering sustainability and ethics concerns, all of which are described in this manuscript. A proof-of-concept prototype was built and tested to verify that it worked as intended.
