Portuguese institute organises summer school on Computational Vision and Artificial Intelligence

How to create more robust, reliable, and conscious artificial intelligence models that ensure data preservation and privacy? This is the motto of the 2022 edition of VISion Understanding and Machine Intelligence (VISUM), a summer school promoted by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC). Over a week, researchers, students, engineers, and scientists from around the world will have access to a training programme, mentoring and networking sessions, and will also be able to participate in an artificial intelligence competition.

Researchers developed a technology to monitor Parkinson's patients outside clinical settings

Patients with Parkinson's disease will be able to monitor the symptoms associated with the disease and send data, in real time, to the healthcare professionals who follow them - from home, and via their mobile phones. This innovation in the health area is only possible thanks to the iHandUapp system, a mobile technology developed by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC); it also features a web platform that aggregates the data and provides healthcare professionals with a record of the clinical evolution of patients.

Portuguese researchers will test hyperbaric system for the collection and life-support of deep-sea species

Researchers from A. Silva Matos Metalomecânica, Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), Porto’s School of Engineering (ISEP), Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) developed a system dedicated to the collection and life-support of species up to 1000 meters deep. This solution enables bringing the species to the surface without any damage caused by pressure differences and keeping them alive for further studies. The first tests will take place between April 23 and May 2, aboard the Mário Ruivo research vessel.

Researchers developed a non-invasive technique to characterise lung cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadliest in the world. The biopsy is the method used for its diagnosis and characterisation, and although it allows obtaining valuable information, it could lead to certain clinical issues. The LuCaS (Lung cancer screening - A non-invasive methodology for early diagnosis) project aims to make decision support systems in the characterisation of lung cancer more objective and quantitative.

INESC TEC develops technology to detect driver fatigue

According to the Portuguese Road Safety Authority, car accidents have a very significant impact on our society, with drowsiness being one of the main causes of accidents in Portugal. This was the basis for the development of the project AUTOMOTIVE – AUTOmatic multimodal drowsiness detection for smart VEhicles, which focused on the study and development of methodologies for driver monitoring, with particular emphasis on fatigue and drowsiness detection, using sensors on the steering wheel.
