INESC TEC participates in the Portuguese edition of the Energy Academy

08th April 2022

The first day will feature a workshop, bringing to Hotel Pesanta Casino Park (Funchal) experts who will present, among others, Madeira and Azores' strategic plans for energy, i.e., a set of solutions adopted to maximise the integration of renewable energies in the electrical systems of Madeira and Porto Santo; another topic under discussion will be the implementation of renewable energy communities.

The afternoon of the first day will focus on funding the energy transition in the regions, namely through the presentation of public financing opportunities, highlighting the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), and the presentation of the role of the Clean Energy for EU Island Secretariat in this context. The day will conclude with a round table featuring private investors with experience in energy transition projects.

This event "will allow us to describe the technical, financial and regulatory efforts being made in the Portuguese islands (Azores, Berlengas, Culatra and Madeira), in order to achieve the decarbonisation of their energy consumption", explained João Peças Lopes, researcher at INESC TEC and professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, who will be one of the speakers at the event.

Jorge Rodrigues de Almeida, moderator of the panel dedicated to financing, stated that the event "is a unique opportunity to explore initiatives underway, and to promote new investments in the decarbonisation of Portuguese islands", while mentioning that "concrete examples of investment, as well as financing opportunities, will be one of the focus of the event".

The second day will start at the Jardim da Serra Civic Centre, dedicated to group reflections and discussions about new ideas for the energy transition, as well as strategies to materialise said ideas. During the afternoon, the attendees will have the opportunity to participate in field visits.

Registration is free, but the number of participants is limited. Details of the Energy Academy and the application form are available on https://clean-energy-islands.ec.europa.eu/events/energy-academy-portugal-edition.
