INESC TEC organises a technological exhibition on communications and multimedia applied to various sectors of activity

26th April 2018

Did you know there is an intelligent Wi-Fi network that, based on traffic and without losing connection quality, is able to turn on and off access points automatically, resulting in significant energy savings? Imagine that you are at a music festival and you want to record a video and share it online. How often does the network gets saturated and you can't go online? What if there was an intelligent drone as a hotspot that solve those problems? Did you also know that there is software to help plastic surgeons planning breast cancer surgeries?

These are some of the examples of technologies that will be exhibited this year on the Open day of INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia, whose key theme is the Artificial Intelligence applied to communications and multimedia.

“We have two main goals for this event of CTM. On the one hand, we want to strengthen the dialogue between scientific research and industry about the communications and multimedia technologies, highlighting the growing importance and future impact of artificial intelligence. We want to address the following questions: what are the main challenges and opportunities for scientific research and development in communications and multimedia? How are the companies of these areas planning to adopt the artificial intelligence? ", mentioned Nuno Almeida, INESC TEC’s researcher responsible for the organization of the event and Professor at FEUP.

To discuss these and other questions, the event will bring together a panel of speakers who deals with these issues on a daily basis. On the other hand, several technologies with different degrees of intelligence developed at INESC TEC's Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia will be shown. The technologies are applicable in various sectors of society, such as telecommunications, digital media, health, safety, energy, sea, agri-food, among others.

"The strategy has been to increasingly include the advances made in machine learning and AI in our research and development activities," concludes the researcher.

They will also be on show autonomous robotic vehicles that, through wireless networks, can operate for several hours and are able to perform missions remotely, collecting multiple navigation data and images. And facial recognition prototypes that help the user to be recognised in various situations, such as authentication on smartphones, payment transactions from biometric data, among others.

João Falcão e Cunha (Dean of FEUP) and José Manuel Mendonça (President of INESC TEC and Professor at FEUP) were the ones responsible for the opening session. Arlindo Oliveira, which is the keynote speaker, is the President of IST and AI specialist and the author of the book "The Digital Mind: How Science is Redefining Humanity".

Pedro Ferreira (STRDEO) and Jorge Moreira (TEKEVER) were the industry representatives and Hélder Oliveira (INESC TEC and FCUP), João Canas Ferreira (INESC TEC and FEUP) and Arlindo Oliveira (IST) were the scientific research representatives during the debate between researchers and entrepreneurs. The RTP journalist Mário Augusto was the moderator.

Before going to the technological exhibition in order to see and to test the technologies available, Manuel Ricardo, the coordinator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia and Professor at FEUP, is going to be responsible for the final remarks and will close the event.
