Besides the site in Guimarães, the company, owned by Fortunato Frederico, has three other factories in Paredes de Coura where it is currently responsible for 200 employees.
In a press release the Kyaia group stated that the new site “is part of the development policy they have undertaken in the last few years” and it “will have new sections for assembling and finishing the footwear”.
Including the other factories and the Foreva network of shops, the Kyaia group employs a total of 500 workers and invoiced around 50 million Euros in 2009.
A large part of the business comes from their own brand, Fly London, that exports “to all over the world”.
The number of positions opening in the new factory is lower due to that fact that the company has adopted more modern production techniques. The innovative ‘one step production process’ which was the result of a partnership with the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto (INESC Porto) has helped Kyaia decrease their production time by half.
With the new technology, production has increased from 400 to 750 pairs of shoes per day without having to increase the number of workers.
