Work developed by INESC TEC’s researchers is featured in the “fibers” magazine cover

The research work of Paulo Robalinho, researcher of INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), will be in the magazine cover of the upcoming October issue of the international scientific journal fibers (MDPI).

13th November 2019

This merit results from the article published in this issue entitled “Fiber Microsphere Coupled in a Taper for a Large Curvature Range” .

At this moment, Paulo Robalinho is a Master’s student in Physical Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, with the thesis entitled “New advanced fiber optic microstructures”, which is being supervised by Orlando Frazão, also an integral element of CAP.

The work, now published at fibers, was developed by the researcher within the scope of his Master’s thesis and consists of an optical fiber microsphere coupled in the middle of a taper and allows to measure radius of curvature ranging between 300 m and 1000 m. This sensor aims at monitoring infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels and other major building projects. Given the uniqueness of the results presented, CAP’s authors and researchers were invited to edit the cover of the October issue of the scientific journal fibers. This work was also carried out with the collaboration of Pedro Manuel Regadas from INESC TEC’s Communication Service.
