The Best Paper of ICSG 2018 is co-written by INESC TEC
A scientific paper based on the GaMDER project, which includes three partners from two countries – INESC TEC (Portugal), ITU and MAKEL (Turkey) – won the Best Paper Award at ICSG 2018 (the 6th International Istanbul Smart Grid Congress and Fair), on 25 and 26 April 2018.

The award winning paper entitled "Identification and Comparison of Power and Energy Management Capabilities of Distributed Energy Resources", which was presented by Mustafa Alparslan Zehir from Turkey, results from the work of ten researchers. These include Filipe Joel Soares and António Cunha Barbosa from INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES).
The main purposes of the project are to forecast the flexibility of several distributed energy resources and to define the best way to use that flexibility in order to reduce the electricity bill.
Therefore, the research was developed in two stages. First, it was tested the behavior of different types of distributed Energy Resources, such as solar panels, wind microturbines, diesel and gas generators, as well as storage technologies such as redox, lithium-ion, sodium–nickel chloride and lead acid batteries.
In a second stage, gamification techniques were used to simulate end users’ behavior and optimise the management of the equipment tested in the previous phase, using dynamic energy tariffs.
The tests took place at RSE DER-TF (Distributed Energy Resources Test Facility of Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico) in Italy. The paper will be published in IEEE Xplore.
