Internet Society Award given to work supervised by INESC TEC

The Portuguese Chapter of Internet Society (ISOC PT) Award, given to the best work presented at INForum – Informatics Symposium, was given to a work supervised by INESC TEC.

03rd January 2018

The winning article was "Anonymization of clinical data", by José Melo and Gabriel David. This paper resulted from José Melo's master's dissertation in Informatics and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. It had the collaboration of GLINTT, a multinational technology company that operates in the area of health.

In this work, the researcher focused on the need to find a solution to share the data stored by information systems, but seeking to protect individual privacy. The focus was the analysis of clinical data, which allows researchers to find new trends, statistics and connections among clinical attributes.

Every edition, INForum gives two awards, the INForum/MAXDATA Award, for best paper (submitted by a student), and the Best Poster Award. This year, a new category was also established, the ISOC PT Award. This award highlights works that promote an open, inclusive, accessible, trustworthy Internet that boosts economic, human and social development.

This symposium aims to bring together the national community belonging to the different areas of Informatics, as well as disseminate, discuss and recognise scientific works. It is also a stage for young researchers who seek dissemination, constructive criticism and encouragement for their work.

Every year, the event presents a set of topics proposed by the community and selected by the organisers, with sessions organised and carried out independently. The critical mass for the strengthening and evolution of Informatics in the country is thus promoted, creating at the same time a space for the meeting of researchers in emerging areas.

The 9th INForum was organised by the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro, with the collaboration of IEETA and the Institute of Telecommunications, and took place on 12 and 13 October, in Aveiro, during TECHdays 2017.
