Abílio Pereira Pacheco, collaborator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) and João Claro, INESC TEC’s Chief Executive Officer, were the authors of the winning paper of the Isabel Themido 2019 Award.

The paper entitled “Operational flexibility in forest fire prevention and suppression: a spatially explicit intra annual optimization analysis, considering prevention, (pre)suppression, and escape costs”, develops an analysis on the challenges of wildland fires that are based on ecological, social, economic and political factors, as well as the corresponding volatilities and impacts.

As part of this biannual award, the jury also decided to award honourable mentions to two other papers presented, which include the participation of INESC TEC’s researchers. On the one hand, the paper entitled “The time window assignment vehicle routing problem with product dependent deliveries”, written by Fábio Neves Moreira, Luís Guimarães and Pedro Amorim, collaborators and Coordinator of the Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), respectively, alongside Bernardo Almada-Lobo, member of INESC TEC’s Board and Diogo Pereira da Silva.

Another honourable mention was given to the paper of Teresa Bianchi-Aguiar (former INESC TEC's researcher), alongside Elsa Silva, Luís Guimarães, Maria Antónia Carravilla and José F. Oliveira, also researchers of CEGI, with the title “Allocating products on shelves under merchandising rules: Multi-level product families with display directions”.

The Isabel Themido Award aims at rewarding the best papers published in 2017 and 2018 by members of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research (APDIO), in peer reviewed international journals in the Operational Research area and its applications.

APDIO, which was created in 1978, is a scientific society that brings together the Portuguese community interested in Operational Research. With around 250 members, it organises various activities, including national and international conferences, symposiums and business meetings.

The award was given on July 24, during the IO2019 - XX Congress of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research, which took place at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar.
