INESC TEC’s DPO receives international professional certificate from Maastricht University

Vasco Dias, Data Protection Officer (DPO) of INESC TEC and ISPUP, recently received the well-known international professional certification by the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC) of the University of Maastricht.

The Maastricht European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity, based in Belgium, is a renowned training centre, with a strong European and international outlook, focused on legal issues related to personal data protection and cybersecurity, which promotes high-level training for DPOs around the world.

This professional certification followed an evaluation conducted by said centre, consisting of an interdisciplinary group of researchers and experts – in areas such as fundamental rights, data privacy, transparency and confidentiality, IT, data security– and a course that combines various training approaches, provided to a group of Data Protection Officers, mostly from the European Union (EU).

Vasco Dias considers that “this type of experience is particularly important when we talk about the exercise of a very recent role, such as that of the data protection officer. Being able to obtain this certification – one of the most important in Europe, today – is certainly a positive and relevant step for the performance of these demanding functions. In addition, there was an enriching exchange of ideas and outlooks with experts and colleagues, not only from several EU member states, but also from Brazil, which recently approved a Regulation with clear similarities to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)”.
