INESC TEC poster awarded in Germany

A poster co-authored by João Paulo Cunha, coordinator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER), won 2nd place for best poster as part of the 23rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM), which took place in Mainz, Germany, on 4 December.

21st December 2015

The poster describes research where the goal was to detect, in real time, epileptic seizures during sleep, which oftentimes go unnoticed. Titled “Combined 3D- and Infrared-System for the Detection of Epileptic Seizures during Sleep”, the poster is co-authored by Felix Achilles (INESC TEC, Portugal and Technische Universität München, Germany), Federico Tombari (University of Bolonha, Italy), V. Belagiannis (Oxford University, UK), Anna Mira Loesch (Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Germany), Nassir Navab (Technische Universität München and John Hopkins Hospital, USA) and Soheyl Noachtar (Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Germany).

The researchers propose an automatic system based on video processing  that makes it possible to quantify and trigger alarms in monitoring scenarios in hospitals and in the homes of patients. Using videos of 52 seizures, the researchers have designed a real-time detection model using deep leaning. According to the researchers, the 3D video data allow the system to perform better when detecting seizures, comparatively to the systems used today.

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with FEUP.
