INESC TEC is part of the Strategic Council for the Digital Economy

The Confederation of Portuguese Business (CIP) created the Strategic Council for the Digital Economy, an advisory body to be coordinated by the former Secretary of State for Youth, and current Director of Corporate and Legal Affairs of Microsoft Portugal, Pedro Duarte. It will be composed of 35 representatives of the sector. One of these elements will be Luís Filipe Antunes, researcher at the Centre for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) of INESC TEC and President of the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.

The Strategic Council for the Digital Economy intends to bring together in the same debate the main actors of the national sector, which should contribute to the definition of strategies for the digital economy in Portugal. This advisory body, like other CIP strategic councils, has as its mission the elaboration of proposals, recommendations or opinions that will be submitted to those in charge of the Confederation.

According to Pedro Duarte, this new Strategic Council "will seek to help the country to assert itself in this new world in which technologies should be a tool of economic success and social justice," since "digital transformation is today a fundamental pillar for the success of companies and, in this way, for generating more growth, more jobs and for guaranteeing the competitiveness of the national economy."

The Strategic Council for the Digital Economy sector comprises representatives of companies such as ANA, TAP, Google, PT/Altice, IBM, Cisco, SAP Portugal, Amazon Western Europe, HP, Oracle and Microsoft. Other companies include Science4you, Gfi Portugal, Portugal Ventures, Pathena, Outsystems, Beta-i, EDP, Unilever Iberia, Critical Manufacturing, TalkDesk and Farfetch.

In addition to INESC TEC/Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, the Council also includes other institutions, such as the University of Aveiro, Invest Braga, the Portuguese Software Association, the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs, Alpac Capital, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Portuguese Association of Consumer Law, the Portuguese Football Federation and the National Association of Information Technology and Electronic Companies.
