IJUP awards researcher from INESC TEC

Carolina Jorge, researcher from INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI) received, on February 7, an honourable mention for her oral session in the 11th edition of IJUP held at Research Center of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.

27th February 2018

IJUP’s scientific committee awarded the project “Predictive Model for Acceptance of Occasional Deliveries”, which was developed by the researcher in the scope of the research line SMILES. SMILES is one of the three main research lines in which the project TEC4Growth is divided.

Carolina Jorge, supervised by João Pedro Pedroso and Ana Viana (collaborator and head of CEGI), suggests a new mathematical model to forecast human behaviour in order to tackle “crowdsourcing” problems. This model helps to predict whether a supermarket customer accepts to make a delivery to a neighbour, in return for which he receives remuneration.

In practice, this investigation provides a solution for parcels and packages deliveries. In other words, those who shop online will be able to see their deliveries made by someone who had to go near their houses, instead of the deliveries being made by supermarket fleet.

The main purpose of this work is to address cost, pollution and traffic problems by reducing the route of supermarket’s distributors.

“This investigation intends to cut distribution costs for the supermarket, and intends to pay those clients (crowdsourcing) in exchange of making deliveries, and to reduce traffic and pollution,” explains Carolina Jorge, a student from Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering from FEUP.
Every year, IJUP – Meeting of Young Researchers of University of Porto– fosters U. Porto student’s participation in research projects.

At IJUP, there are several sessions and debates, and since 2008, IJUP awards students that have the best oral sessions or poster viewing.

The meeting award of the best sessions will take place at Grand Hall of Rectory Building of the U.Porto on 13 march at 11 a.m.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, UP-FCUP and IPP-ISEP.
