SMART Cables, Science and Society: Towards a deep-sea long-term monitoring of the global Ocean
Monitoring technologies play a central role in a world filled with such precise, rich, and diverse data. But when, as it is usually said, humankind knows more about the moon than the Earth's oceans, it means researchers still need to dive deeper to collect invaluable information about our blue world.
The international workshop “Towards a deep-sea long-term monitoring of the global Ocean” will be held on 9–10 November, 2026 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), aiming to strengthen the role of SMART Cables as a strategic digital infrastructure for continuous, long-term observation of the deep ocean.
By collecting real-time data directly from the seabed, these systems can make a decisive contribution not only to scientific progress, particularly in oceanography, geophysics, environmental monitoring, and climate change research, but also to our society, looking at preventing and minimising the consequences of natural disasters, such as earthquakes or tsunamis.
A conference that intends to discuss, share, and consolidate strategies among national and international stakeholders, promoting the best possible use of data collected by future intelligent submarine cable systems, including Atlantic CAM as a SMART Cable.
