SOFTWARE-PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE

Abstract
We present Jay, a software framework for offloading applications in hybrid edge clouds. Jay provides an API, services, and tools that enable mobile application developers to implement, instrument, and evaluate offloading applications using configurable cloud topologies, offloading strategies, and job types. We start by presenting Jay's job model and the concrete architecture of the framework. We then present the programming API with several examples of customization. Then, we turn to the description of the internal implementation of Jay instances and their components. Finally, we describe the Jay Workbench, a tool that allows the setup, execution, and reproduction of experiments with networks of hosts with different resource capabilities organized with specific topologies. The complete source code for the framework and workbench is provided in a GitHub repository.

Abstract
The urban development model used in the past has proved unsustainable. Due to this fact, cities such as Rio de Janeiro, with high population density, mainly regarding precarious settlements, need immediate practical actions to become more sustainable. The insufficiency of planning and investments contributed to the city occupying the 8th position of the most vulnerable cities in the world, triggering the primary motivation of this research study. Therefore, the leading research focused on exploring how sustainable social housing (SH) could contribute to Rio de Janeiro becoming more sustainable. Literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interviews were carried out to identify sustainable SH in Rio de Janeiro that can serve as a benchmark and listen to the opinion of engineers or architects regarding the importance of sustainable SH for the population and the city. Thus, in consonant with structural changes in thinking, production, and living, it was possible to identify the main contributions of sustainable SH to the city.

Abstract
Sales forecasts are an important tool for inventory management, allowing retailers to balance inventory levels with customer demand and market conditions. By using sales forecasts to inform inventory management decisions, companies can optimize their inventory levels and avoid costly stockouts or excess inventory costs. The scale of the forecasting problem in the retail domain is significant and requires ongoing attention and resources to ensure accurate and effective forecasting. Recent advances in machine learning algorithms such as deep learning have made possible to build more sophisticated forecasting models that can learn from large amounts of data. These global models can capture complex patterns and relationships in the data and predict demand across multiple regions and product categories. In this paper, we investigate the cross-learning scenarios, inspired by the product hierarchy frequently utilized in retail planning, which enable global models to better capture interdependencies between different products and regions. Our empirical results obtained using M5 competition dataset indicate that the cross-learning approaches exhibit significantly superior performance compared to local forecasting benchmarks. Our findings also suggest that using partial pooling at the lowest aggregation level of the retail hierarchical allows for a more effective capture of the distinct characteristics of each group.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

Abstract
This study reviewed the literature to understand how does research produce impact?. Despite all discussion threads in the literature, it was clear that management of the Front-end of Innovation (FEI) of non-profit research centers has received little attention. As a result, this study was a first step toward proposing a model that describes the Front-End of R&D at non-profit Research Centers. This paper is an Integrative Literature Review that follows the PRISMA statement methodology. Building on FEI2O's High-Level Ontology, this paper's contribution elicited relevant constructs from the literature and took the first steps to extend it to the Front-End of R&D. New research-related concepts such as the RESEARCH CONCEPT, the INFLUENCING FACTORS, and the RESEARCH PROJECT were introduced. The RESEARCH PROJECT produces RESULTS that may have an IMPACT ON SOCIETY. All these concepts are interconnected through a feedback loop that feeds the FEI2O: STRATEGIC PURPOSE of the non-profit research center, contributing to the advancement of its research strategy, objectives, and goals. The current work contributed to understanding a domain of knowledge that is of interest to researchers, research managers, and those interested in bringing new scientific research results to society.

Abstract
When dealing with cutting problems, the generation of usable leftovers proved to be a good strategy for decreasing material waste. Focusing on practical applications, the main challenge in the implementation of this strategy is planning the cutting process to produce leftovers with a high probability of future use without complete information about the demand for any ordered items. We addressed the two-dimensional cutting stock with usable leftovers and uncertainty in demand, a complex and relevant problem recurring in companies due to the unpredictable occurrence of customer orders. To deal with this problem, a two-stage formulation that approximates the uncertain demand by a finite set of possible scenarios was proposed. Also, we proposed a matheuristic to support decision-makers by providing good-quality solutions in reduced time. The results obtained from the computational experiments using instances from the literature allowed us to verify the matheuristic performance, demonstrating that it can be an efficient tool if applied to real-life situations.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PRODUCTION ECONOMICS AND PROJECT EVALUATION, ICOPEV 2022

Abstract
This paper explores the effects of Industry 5.0 on Sustainable Development. The authors first developed a primer review to introduce the new research agenda of Industry 5.0. Secondly, they performed a state-of-the-art review on the topics of Industry 4.0/Industry 5.0 and Sustainability. The eligible documents have been subjected to a content analysis that identified seven themes. The present research identified a positive relationship between the implementation of Industry 4.0 and sustainable development attainment. This relationship constitutes an opportunity for Industry 5.0 to promote sustainability. Notwithstanding, a series of barriers, drivers and enablers were also identified. Also, this research conclusions are aligned with the explanation presented by the European Commission for the development of the Industry 5.0 concept. However, this will not be enough to shift the paradigm effectively. This paper compiled and analysed the most recent advancements in the new research agenda of Industry4.0/Industry 5.0 dedicated explicitly to sustainability, a topic that requires development in theoretical and empirical research.
