InstitutionalA group of seven scientists spent six nights and seven days inside Gruta do Natal (Terceira Island, Azores), replicating the lunar environment. It was the first analog mission carried out in Portugal, and the goal was to turn the Azores into a training site for astronauts from all over the world. They called it the CAMões project (Caving Analog Mission for Ocean, Earth and Space Exploration). INESC TEC, together with the Associação Os Montanheiros, led and organised this project from the beginning; not only because the superior/leader of the mission is a researcher at the institution, Ana Pires, but also because if featured technology from various areas of the Institute, tested and applied to a great mission: to familiarise the younger generations with STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).

InstitutionalDetecting explosive charges on a submarine cable, or signalling and assessing the status of a submarine, located at a depth of 90 meters – with a crew on board, simulating an emergency situation. These are two examples of the tests carried out by INESC TEC, during REPMUS, the world’s largest testing exercise on Unmanned Marine Systems and other emerging technologies, organised by the Portuguese Navy.

InstitutionalHow to diversify aquaculture production, ensuring the balanced and sustainable development of the sector? This was the motto of the 2023 edition of Aquaculture Europe – the largest European event dedicated to aquaculture. As in previous editions, INESC TEC participated in this initiative, presenting projects and competencies in the development of technological solutions towards improving this field.

InstitutionalA group of INESC TEC researchers was recently in the Arctic collecting environmental DNA samples in extreme conditions. The team used a technology called biosampler, which facilitates the task of biologists who will then analyse the samples. The biosampler was coupled to a robot that allowed the autonomous operation of the two Portuguese technologies. The researchers returned to Portugal with samples, collected in different points of the Arctic - now under a laboratory analysis.

InstitutionalThe largest international event dedicated to diving activities took place in Lisbon, in early October - with INESC TEC participation. INESC TEC researcher Paula Lima participated in one of the discussion panels of the "Diving Talks", where she had the opportunity to present the work carried out by the institution and the robotic solutions for extreme underwater environments.

InstitutionalThe installation of the second prototype of a smart underwater cable (two km long) took place in the vicinity of the Port of Sesimbra, in the open sea and at depths greater than 100 meters – with the support of the Portuguese Navy. The research and development of the three sets of sensors that are installed along the cable to gather real-time data was carried out by INESC TEC, CINTAL and the University of Minho.

InstitutionalSeveral astronaut candidates will be able to carry out an analog space mission for a whole week, at a volcanic cave on Terceira Island (the Azores). Due to its characteristics, Gruta Natal sets up the perfect environment to simulate mission on Mars or the Moon, facilitating training, technology testing, and data collection, among other scientific activities. CAMões is the name of this pioneering project in national territory, with INESC TEC as one of the promoters.
