The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit at INESC TEC will be organising the 13th edition of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2012) that will take place at the São Bento da Vitória Monastery in Porto between 8th and 12th October 2012.

In collaboration with the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) and the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Laboratory (LIACC), the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has developed an algorithm that understands the synchronisation of rhythm and this algorithm has been incorporated into a humanoid robot at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

P3, an informative site for the Público Portuguese newspaper aimed at youngsters has been available since 22nd September. The portal was developed by Ricardo Morla and Bruno Ribeiro, researchers at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit at INESC Porto.

In conjunction with a team from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (FEUP), INESC Porto has developed software that can automatically analyse mammograms. The process is based on comparing similar cases and the software automatically analyses and validates cases where a breast cancer diagnosis is clear. The project is called Semantic PACS and is an innovative system that is 100% reliable when detecting malignant tumours. It reduces the waiting time for a diagnosis, thus reducing the patient’s emotional stress, and represents a significant advance in the detection of breast cancer.

Carlos Guedes, a researcher from INESC Porto’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), presented project Kinetic at the Music Hall in Porto (Casa da Música). The project develops algorithms for the generation of music which are controlled by interfaces that use human gestures.

In this year, so notoriously marked by the economic crisis, INESC Porto has increased its budget from 10 to 12.5 million Euros. However, this is actually one of the most conservative budgets so far: close to 90% of the predicted income has been contractually guaranteed since the beginning of the year. With his feet firmly on the ground the INESC Porto President admits that despite INESC Porto having practically doubled in size over the last five years, “this does not mean an obsession with records”. José Manuel Mendonça explains that a group effort from all of the collaborators will be necessary to maintain this sustainable growth and he recognises that guaranteeing a high level of quality while growing so rapidly will be an enormous challenge.

In November INESC Porto took part in the project meeting for NSRF (The National Strategic Reference Framework) Living Usability Lab – LUL (Living Usability Lab for Next Generation Networks). Other project partners include Microsoft, and the University of Aveiro in Portugal. The project, which is active in the field of live usability testing, focuses on the development of technologies and services to support healthy, productive and active senior citizens.

Fabien Gouyon, researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was invited to edit a special issue of the Computer Music Journal of MIT Press, together with Álvaro Barbosa of CITAR - Research Center for Science and Technology in Art, and Xavier Serra of the Music Technology Group of the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
