"Innovation at the Service of Companies" – this was the motto for the Open Day organised jointly by the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG), which took place on 21 June at INESC TEC. This event targeted companies in the sector of Information, Communication and Electronics Technologies operating in the global market.

By the end of June INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) will be concluding the project Living Usability Lab (LUL) – Living Laboratory for the Use of Innovative Technologies in Next Generation Networks, a collaborative R&D project between academia and industry in Portugal. The project aimed to develop technologies that allow senior citizens to become more healthy and active.

Augustin Olivier, manager at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and advisor to the Board, and António Gaspar, manager at the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) participated, on May 4, in another meeting of the A2B sessions promoted by the University of Porto (U. Porto). The purpose of this meeting was to find solutions to winemaking practices that will make the Douro region more productive and sustainable.

Luís Pessoa, a researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), participated in a workshop with the Brazilian oil company PETROBRAS, organised by INESC TEC. The meeting was held at CENPES (a Research Center at PETROBRAS) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 24 and 25 April.

José Machado da Silva, a researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was on a sabbatical at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) between February and May this year. While at the CMU, the researcher had the opportunity to collaborate with Jeyanandh Paramesh teaching the subject “RF IC Design and Implementation”.

In April INESC TEC began a project with IT-Aveiro that aims to provide personalised communications to groups of users according to their needs, using Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). The project is called Multiple Context-based Wireless Mesh Networks (MC-WMNs) and has a budget of around 120 thousand Euros.
