INESC TEC develops technology that monitors frying oils using optical systems and smartphones

A unique technology in the world, made in Portugal, will make it possible to control the quality of frying oils using optical and software systems that register and monitor data through smartphones. The R&D project brought together INESC TEC, AMBIFOOD, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) and ASAE’s Chemistry Lab.

INESC TEC participates in project to control quality of frying oils

INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) and Centre for Applied Photonics are involved in a project – together with AMBIFOOD, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) and ASAE’s (health and safety authority) Chemistry Laboratory – where the goal is to create technology to control the quality of frying oils. This work has an impact on public health as there is a causal link between the ingestion of oils used for frying food, their degradation, and the emergence of certain pathologies.

INESC TEC researchers develop Bragg network using innovative methods

Now that 20 years have passed since Francisco Araújo, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), developed the first Bragg network in April 1994 (see Figure 1), the CAP researchers Paulo Marques (coordinator) and Daniel Alexandre fabricated the first Bragg network using a femtosecond laser (impulses lasting 200x10-15s, that is, one millionth of one billionth of a second), purchased recently as part of the BEST CASE (Figure 2) project.

Wine production and technology go hand in hand to assert Portugal status

Portugal has a high potential to produce quality wines, especially due to its climate and geological conditions, wine variety and tradition in the sector. But if it is certain that the natural conditions have contributed to strengthen the country’s position as the 12th largest wine producer in the world [1], it is also true that combining technology and these innate factors is key to strengthen this status.
